Ruthless Gio rings the Rangers changes as key man ‘axed’

So where DOES the imminent signing of Turkey international LB Ridvan Yilmaz leave Borna Barisic?

When Bassey left we suggested this was Barisic’s big opening, his big chance to seize LB back for himself, and in fairness he had a strong performance v West Ham.

But the addition of Yilmaz for around £6M is a massive statement – the soon-to-be former Besiktas star isn’t being signed for £6M to sit on the bench – he will be an immediate first team starter.

And it’s at the expense of Barisic who is reduced to squad depth.

Which means Rangers aren’t satisfied with the Croat as first choice – and it appears Gio has never really favoured him hence always picking former first choice Calvin Bassey where possible and Barisic being one of Gio’s lesser-used players overall.

In short, this isn’t a signing to provide Barisic with some competition, as we did with the addition of Zukowski to give some cover to Tav on the other side – this is a signing to replace Bassey AND Borna as the first choice.

Borna must have felt as well that the sale of Bassey gave him a big opening – it turned out it didn’t. Rangers have spent around £11M on Davies and Yilmaz, and you don’t do that for cover.

You do that on first team starters.

So unfortunately, Borna, as much as we love you here on Ibrox Noise, your Rangers days are numbered – you either leave now or accept your place as a squad member, because Gio has made it clear he wants his own men. And he’s signed them.

It is what it is, the club is bigger than any one man and there’s no room for sentiment.
