Gio confirms the true reason Rangers signed Ben Davies

After many fans concluded Ben Davies was a direct replacement for Calvin Bassey, ourselves included, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed last night he is really a replacement for Filip Helander and the general need for left-footed defenders.

Helander is once again blighted by injury, with the Swede out for an undetermined time, so Gio took action swiftly and brought in Davies. With the loss of Bassey as well (confirmed at the time of writing) Rangers needed further options with the left foot, something GVB confirmed is much harder to find in the market.

And that’s Davies’ role, to fill in with high quality depth as Bassey did on that side.

With Rangers making a move in for Turkey’s Ridvan Yilmaz, the 21-year old would be the main choice for LB, not Davies and probably not Barisic any more, but for CB, the Englishman is a strong option to partner Goldson going forward.

Rangers needed defenders, reliable and fit defenders – unfortunately Helander (and Souttar, in truth) didn’t fit that, so we needed more as well.

Davies, as a rare left-footed CB, is likely to be the main choice to fit in besides Goldson.

You don’t pay £4M for a benchwarmer.

We’ll see how it goes.
