Celtic meltdown as Rangers ‘get’ referee for Sunday’s clash

It didn’t matter who was appointed referee for Sunday, fans of at least one side would be unhappy.

See, as much as Rangers fans want to think Celtic own the referees and SFA, we’ve seen plenty of horrendous decisions go against them lot to know that’s very unlikely to be accurate.

Don Robertson, for example, isn’t popular with them either for some recent decisions, and John Beaton sure isn’t flavour of the month with their manager.

Nick Walsh? He was the man in the middle at Parkhead with that infamous non-penalty, albeit the controversies that day were mainly Willie Collum on VAR.

And of course Beaton has been charged with Sunday’s episode of Rangers v Celtic, with Walsh himself on VAR.

So it’s safe to say ‘that’ lot are unlikely to be happy with Beaton on the whistle, especially with what Herr Rodgers said about him recently.

In fact, one even wonders if he’s been put on this match because of Brenda’s unbelievable comments, and the fact the SFA let him off lightly with just that one match ban for them.

Do we think Beaton will favour Rangers?

Unlikely, although any referee is going to be influenced a speck by a gigantic home crowd screaming for a particular verdict – it’s hard to overstate the buzz a ref gets in giving a big decision to the home crowd and their roar of approval.

When the referee points to the spot for the home side or sends off a player of the away side in an Old Firm, the crowd cheer is kind of for them, and certainly the decision.

But of course end of the day there isn’t a referee north of the border widely-endorsed by either set of fans – the best we had was Hugh Dallas who was probably the most competent referee in recent decades.

But that’s a long time ago and now it’s Robertson, Beaton and Walsh. Altogether better?

Probably not.
