We’ve covered this in passing, but it’s time to look more deeply into this – the return of Graeme Souness to Rangers and his extremely misguided comments on Talksport to Jim White.

We have done little but support Graeme Souness due to a deep respect for the man. One of us, a true Ranger all the way and we THOUGHT he knew what the club needed, hence loving the idea of his being an advisor.

But the Lampard confession has changed everything.

We still have big respect for the man, but now have to really question his wisdom if he wanted Frank Lampard ahead of Philippe Clement.

While Ibrox Noise defended Lampard (he’s not as awful a manager as his reputation implies, far from it) Clement is on a different planet – a true football brain, man-manager, winner. Exactly what Rangers needed.

And yet even with him in place, Souness still digs his heels in insisting he wanted Lampard. Yes, he exalts praise to Clement as well, but he actually sounds bitter the board didn’t listen to him. And frankly, no one else did either.

We now have to majorly advise caution over him – he was a great pundit, well-respected and people listened to him, and of course, he has every right to his opinion. We’re not all going to agree.

But his opinion influencing the board in this instance would have seen Frank Lampard appointed Rangers manager, and we’d have lost out on Clement.

And we can’t endorse that.

Do we still want him back on an advisory basis? Well, not even such a decorated individual as Souness is going to get it right every time, and it is only advisory, but his opinion is going to carry weight.

And that Lampard opinion nearly took the club back another two years, as if Michael Beale hadn’t already done enough damage.

Plus of course the undermining of Clement. The manager is clear that the guy who will be advising the club doesn’t actually endorse him – they’re not on the same page. Yes, Souness rates him, but he didn’t pick him and even dug his heels in to borderline protest about Lampard.

We’re not sure that’s the way we want to go forward, frankly.

We still respect Souness, but his return is now laced with toxicity. We need everyone on the same page supporting the boss 100%. And Souness isn’t on that page.

We urge huge caution about completing this signing.
