There’s a lot of talk this morning about Leon Balogun in light of Rangers’ latest defensive frailties at a high level.
Since Rangers let him go, he’s become infinitely more popular, with a lot of supporters (including Ally) pining for his return and suggesting his departure was an error.
We don’t agree, and we’re his biggest fans.
See, Balogun was constantly injured. He managed a complete total of 65 appearances in two years, which of a possible 140 isn’t great.
It’s alright, but not great.
And he was frequently injured when we really needed him.
This is why he was let go – his value for money wasn’t good enough and we couldn’t count on him.
It’s the same with Filip Helander. Had his deal expired this summer he’d have moved on too, but lucky for him he gets free pay despite perennial injury.
There’s no coincidence the Nigerian is a free agent – suitors look at his CV and nod approvingly until his injury record is highlighted and they walk away immediately.
But of course, it begs the question of why we signed a younger version in Souttar, who is a complete sicknote.
He was intended as a replacement body for Connor Goldson, but we don’t really know why we went for such a risky acquisition who is already grounded through injury.
But that’s for another debate.
Balogun is too injured too be any use at Ibrox. We love him, and would have had he and Helander in an ideal world as our defence, but that was a million miles off happening.
And that’s why we don’t agree with Ally on this one.
Are my comments working yet have i been timed out lol ?
My protonmail email the comments arent going through, i changed to my Yahoomail one and now its working again… I dunno whats up.
Regrettably I agree. We could certainly have done with him at set pieces the other night but if he had been at the club there would’ve been at 50-60% chance that he would’ve been unavailable through injury.
