It’s early in the season but some Rangers fans have condemned John Souttar to the B Team already after the former Hearts man’s struggles with the weight of the shirt appeared stark against Livingston.
Given his big shiny debut today at Tony Macaroni for his first competitive appearance in the colours of the Famous, the 26-year old was in from the beginning, and fans were far from impressed.
He’s definitely not started off on the front foot at all, and has looked sluggish, scared, and his part in the goal today only weakened his case for keeping his place.
Is it fair?
If you play for the Mighty Glasgow Rangers you’re going to be judged for every error you make, and sadly Souttar hasn’t slipped into the role like a glove, but has looked a rabbit in headlights so far.
Is the weight too heavy?
Maybe, and not everyone settles at the same pace – Tom Lawrence might have looked classy in preseason but he was disappointing today and didn’t have a notable impact. And despite our slightly critical rating of Tillman’s debut, we also noticed he did have an intelligence and positional sense – just needs to get up to speed with the SPL.
So different players adjust at different levels.
Unfortunately Souttar’s been consistently poor in all his appearances so far, and while he was an excellent stopper for Hearts, this looks psychological more than anything else.
He was rightly taken off with the similarly-poor Kamara, and those changes altered the game.
Rangers wait for no man, so if John wants to assert himself as a real Rangers player, he’ll have to up his game, because Gio isn’t a charity.
Lets give him a chance,Bassey was the same a nightmare at the start,
The problem is we need the 3 points every game to take this league so time isnt on his side Onwards💪

Aye the Jersey does seem heavy and constrictive on young John. I still think we need to factor in the Goldson effect. I also think Barasic has all but run his Rangers race too.
Would rather Souttar kept his place than Goldson. Anyone knowhow many passes Goldson gave away today ? His passing success % must hv been really low. To be fair i’d rather Katic in there anyway going through the opposition than a “ball playing CB” in there giving the ball away and trying long range passes.
As i said previously , when he signed ,not a fan ,injury prone and just not good enough ,I hope to be proven wrong .

Think everyone needs to get off his back. Has he had a howler yesterday? Aye. Has he been great in pre season, not especially. How many players in our history haven’t hit the ground running but have turned out to be great Rangers. Quite a damn few and I also imagine most of those didn’t lose their brother a few weeks before playing their first games. Souttar will come good, he just needs time and support.
Give the guy a break I don’t think he should have played on that atrocious surface given his history of achilles injuries. You have also got to remember that he played on the right hand side of a back 3 at Hearts and is now on the left of a back 4. Rangers supporters are far to quick in dismissing players as rubbish after 1 game think Hateley Goram Ricksen and Bassey and all of them became great Rangers.
It was his first competitive match, so let’s hope he can step up his game. Should we qualify for the CL group stage, the mere thought of McLaughlin, Goldson, Souttar and Barisic at the back, however, makes me feel more than just a bit uncomfortable.

This is what ive been saying, in ideal pairing would be a fit Helander and Katic. Obv Phils injured so Katic and someone else, the new guy Davies mabay ?
