Rangers fans were delighted today at the first sign of Filip Helander’s return from injury after the big Swede attended training, showing himself to be pretty much fully fit and ready for action again.

The former Malmo star sustained yet another horror injury earlier this year and was ruled out for the season, but his return to Auchenhowie for preseason doesn’t just present him as returning to fitness, but fully back to his best, even if obviously, like the rest, he is some way off full match fitness.

But the heartening sight is seeing him seemingly at about the same stage everyone else is – physically fit and ready, and now preparing for the hard graft of prep to get to full match fitness.

The question is, is Helander now being groomed as the long-term partner to Connor Goldson?

Niko Katic is of course at training too, but we believe he’s consider more backup/depth if he is to remain, while Helander, a Swedish international and arguably Rangers’ best overall defender for pure quality since he joined, is in poll position, IF he can keep fit, to seize that jersey for himself.

We are huge fans of the former Bologna stopper, and we only urge massive caution over his propensity to getting frequently injured.

If he can stay problem free, Filip Helander is our best CB bar none.

We shall see.

  1. Glad to see him back ,last chance saloon I would say ,if he gets another injury that’s it for me .

  2. I think it would be a Goldson and Helander partnership. I’ve always thought Souttar would be a back up player though he’ll probably see a fair bit of domestic duty. Not sure where Katic fits in but I’d rather keep him than sign another CB. We need that money spent elsewhere.

  3. Goldson, Helander, Souttar, Katic and Leon King.
We’re well-served in the central defensive area, however I’m not sure if there’s a path to the first team for Leon at the minute. Hopefully Gio will find a way of marshalling his resources in the best way for the benefit of the team whilst keeping everyone happy, however I feel 5 central defenders is probably one too many.
