£30M for Calvin Bassey? What Rangers players are TRULY worth…

Earlier we discussed Calvin Ramsay’s £10M transfer from Aberdeen to Liverpool, with his sale being one of the all-time highest SPL values placed on a player.

The obvious conclusion was to translate that over to namesake Calvin Bassey – 4 years his senior, far more developed, an international, a UEL finalist, everything going for him.

Reports that Rangers want £25M now seemed modest, and clearly he was worth more.

But just what is the value for an SPL player at the upper end of the scale?

Well, we took a look on Ibrox Noise at world transfers OUTSIDE the big five leagues – as in players coming from leagues which are not England, France, Spain, Germany or Italy, and the reality is eye-opening.

Far from these leagues not generating big deals, they most certainly do. But there’s a huge catch. We’ll get to that.

The biggest of the bunch is Portugal’s João Félix, picture above, who set Madrid back £120M from Benfica. Then the recent Darwin Nunez from the same club, this time to Liverpool for around £70M. Rúben Dias again from Lisbon cost Man City £60M.

There’s Bruno Fernandes from Sporting who cost Utd around £60M, but it’s Fred from Ukrainian giants Shahktar for £53M which starts to really get interesting, before Hulk from Zenit to China cost £50M. Éder Militão was another Portugal sale, going to Madrid from Porto for £45M, while Alex Teixeira left Shahktar for China for another £45M.

So, outside the big five there are BIG deals going, mainly from Portugal, but a lot from Ukraine, from Russia, and even from Brazil itself.

But Calvin Bassey is Scotland, so what’s the biggest value from a country that isn’t Portugal, Ukraine or Russia? Davinson Sánchez from Ajax to Spurs, around £40M.

In terms of a smaller country, an Austria, a Scotland, a Finland, a Belgium, the biggest transfer we can find on record is Celtic’s Tierney to Arsenal at £25M or Jonathan David from Belgium to France at the same price – because Austrian league’s star man, Norway’s Erling Haaland, only cost Dortmund £17M, and even more confusingly only cost City £60M. Finland? Rangers signed the star striker there, Alfredo Morelos, for just £800,000.

What we’re getting at is there are five leagues where the big stars are at, but then there’s Portugal who sell their South American (and occasionally Portuguese) superstars at full ‘big five’ rates.

Ukraine were wealthy with one or two very rich clubs before it all went horribly wrong for that nation, while Russia naturally have oligarchs owning their clubs and can hold out for huge profit.

But the lesser football countries outside of Ukraine and Portugal don’t have the financial muscle historically to demand the going rate for their best players. Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Belgium, Scotland – they can’t go anywhere close into the range of the 8 mentioned leagues.

Best Belgium can do is Jonathan David for £25M to Lille, just like Tierney. Same as Romania (£10M), Bulgaria (£8M), Czech Rep (£15M.

BUT the sale of Calvin Ramsay to Liverpool may have changed the landscape in Scotland. A Scottish midtable team able to earn up to £10M and maybe beyond for their prize asset could well have shifted what Rangers and others can demand for their best players.

Can we really get over £30M for one of our best players?

That’s really down to how badly a suitor wants one.

  1. I would say it depends on a bidding war as well IN ,If there is a few at the table then the price can be hiked up ,if not well …we can ask for what we want and see if they will pay .
However ! ….I hope he stays ,with all this valuation chat ,we have a league to reclaim and CL possibly to contend with with ,where loads of filthy cash can be made .
