We absolutely hate banging on and on about ‘Tav and Goldson’ but there’s no doubt there’s a correlation between Rangers’ underachievements the past 6+ years and their continued use.

The number of times in the past Rangers fans would argue at Ibrox Noise with ‘well four managers have deemed them good enough, so I’ll take their opinion over yours’ only deepens the problem, the problem rebutted to that argument with ‘well 3 trophies since 2011 would suggest those managers aren’t exactly correct’.

And there’s the issue – are we fundamentally blaming James Tavernier and Connor Goldson for our malaise, our lack of trophies?

Steven Gerrard spent Walter Smith-levels of money – £35M over 3 years, and that’s only risen since then.

£20M in 2022 under Gio, £20M last summer under Beale as well – since Gerrard took over Rangers have spent £75M since 2018 and have 3 trophies total.

So let’s not allege the spending has been bad.

But the one constant has remained – those two. And Barisic, to an extent.

We can’t very well pin everything on two players, but they’re the one consistent constant since 2018, with by a mile the most appearances.

And 90% of all goals conceded can be pinned on one of them.

We’ve historically seen Nathan Patterson shine at RB, we’ve seen Leon Balogun tubthump in the middle, and yet Tav and Goldson are not for shifting.

Where does it stop?

What is the real reason for their immunity?

Football is a team game, and you can’t blame one or two players for overall – yet name a single fan who doesn’t blame Goldson for Sevilla? Or who doesn’t blame him for about 60%+ of Rangers’ conceded goals?

And Sunday was yet more. It was more hapless work from the pair of them, with the obligatory penalty for Tav keeping his numbers in check.

Could it be argued the pair of them have cost three managers their jobs?

Yes, it could. It’s hard not to look back at them as a huge component of why Rangers concede such bad goals and such careless goals.

The whispers about our defence being Scotland’s best have also died now because Celtic got Vickers back, so suddenly their defence is a lot better now. Last 3 matches Rangers conceded 7, Celtic 3. There’s a change now there with his return.

What we are saying is Philippe Clement must tread carefully – these two could cost him his job as well as three men before him.

  1. Couldn’t agree more, fed up hear about Tav’s goals as a justification for the fact he cant / wont defend or lead. His primary position is a RB, he needs to be able to defend before anything else and he cant. Said this before but would much rather see a striker taking the pens so it boosts their confidence, much rather have a striker with the season goal count Tav has then a RB with goal count that practically counts for nothing, all the goals and assists in the world but no one wants him, says it all really. I had seen enough of Goldson by 2019, sick of the sight of him.
