Rangers biding their time as January activity quietens

It’s all gone dramatically quiet at Rangers – after a recent fervour of hype and speculation, the only significant movement this January has been the exit of Sam Lammers to Utrecht on loan, but aside obviously Fabio Silva’s arrival last month, there’s just been nothing but rampant gossip.

One by one all the major links have fallen – Batshuayi, Doig, Gils and Manhoef four such players who were strongly linked but whose stories have gone desperately quiet, only for clickbait sites like those that notoriously-unreliable Fraser Fletcher writes for to try to keep those stories going citing fictional sources.

Fletcher is the only one (exclusively) alleging Manhoef is still on the table, but he isn’t – Vitesse have stated they wish to hold onto him, and while the player does seek a move based on ambition, the chances of it happening this window are very small.

And is unlikely to be Rangers.

Ibrox Noise will not claim a monopoly on the truth, we will get a few bits and bobs wrong and during silly season there’s a LOT of fiction floating around.

For example, the Michy Batshuayi story was completely true, Rangers did contact the player and there were discussions, but we pulled out, which Ibrox Noise told you yesterday (and the s*n stole) and we move on. Other outlets suggested there was nothing in the story. What they kept out of their report was the phrase ‘any more’.

It is a bit concerning that we’re nearly halfway through January and not a single player has come in.

We moaned about this already in a previous article recently, and the responses were relatively predictable from ‘trust in the process’ to ‘better to wait and get the right players’.

There’s a modicum of truth there, given our example of 2022 and four players who all failed spectacularly.

But those were panic buys, last-minute, and that’s now starting to be the territory we’re going into.

Proper ‘waiting and planning’ sees the players arrive early – they’re earmarked, they’re sorted, and it’s a case of putting the final touches. Just like we did with Silva.

But he’s only one man, and we need a lot more.

At this point it’s Lammers out Silva in. Which is admittedly better than nothing but we need to get things moving much faster because the current squad is well short.

Manager Philippe Clement did say there would be activity, things would happen. Indeed he said we’d be quite active, but at the moment that work isn’t bringing us results.

Just the one new recruit is in Spain with the squad, that being Silva, and we really hope by the time serious football is back that at least one further major player has come in!
