Matondo from Rangers to Mainz? Here’s the facts

There’s been a lot of talk about Rangers’ Rabbi Matondo to Mainz, and can we just say, this is a victory for the fake news brigade who take an online suggestion and make it a story.

Matondo to Mainz was a mere suggestion made in German press, Bild specifically, simply because Mainz’ director took him to Schalke in the first place, and the move hasn’t worked out in Glasgow (admittedly overall true).

There is absolutely no transfer story here, the article was a conjecture piece about how Mainz’ attack is the worst in the Bundesliga, ‘so here’s some forwards we think could help’.

There’s nothing behind this.

And yet naturally Scottish press have run with misinformation happily to make a story.

As far as Ibrox Noise are concerned, Matondo has not been Rangers’ worst offender in recent weeks, he’s actually been ok and looked pretty dangerous. He’s more composed on the ball than Abdallah Sima, and much quicker than Ross McCausland.

But the idea we’re selling him to Mainz is fiction – it’s not unlike Rangers signing Josh Doig, which was also a suggested/fiction story in the press and which gained legs and turned into an actual story.

It even swept Ibrox Noise up a bit.

But this is non-existent.

Rangers have real issues with quality on the wings – Oscar Cortes hasn’t happened yet, and as things stand our options are McCausland, Matondo and Wright. An embarrassment of riches it isn’t.

So why would Rangers sell or let go one of the few options we actually have?

Strange story.
