Kieran Dowell did not travel with the Rangers squad to Spain, amid sources suggesting he seeks his move back to the English Championship amid lack of minutes in Scotland and a failure to settle in.

The attacking midfielder was surprisingly used by manager Philippe Clement after the forgotten man because useful reserves with John Lundstram, Nico Raskin, Jose Cifuentes and Ryan Jack’s injuries, and the ex-Norwich playmaker became a very handy and safe player to fall back on.

He was far from exceptional, doing well enough, but was clearly interested in getting his ticket out, even putting himself in the spotlight with a bunch of media performances last month.

And his absence from Spain suggests very strongly he’s in the course of working that ticket out, just like Glen Kamara did in the summer with his absence from all training while he negotiated with other clubs, eventually finding Leeds.

As far as we can tell, Dowell is the only significant squad member not to make the Spain camp, but then we may have missed one or two because it is a big group.

There were some claims LB duo Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic were AWOL, but that is obviously completely untrue.

And after his standby for Nigeria was overlooked in favour of Nice’s Terem Moffi, Cyriel Dessers is present in Spain and going through his paces, so that’s something at least.

Sam Lammers is of course gone now, and was never in Spain, and it appears everyone else is there.

In short, everyone who made it to Spain is generally-speaking a vital part of the squad, and if you’re not there you’re of no importance.

So why Jon McLaughlin flew we’ve no idea!
