A bonkers Rangers XI to face Aris in Cyprus

So why not, why not a predicted XI for Thursday – in all honesty it doesn’t matter too much but we’re intrigued to see what Steven Davis and his team come up with. We doubt there will be much change, but we’re going to select our own preference based on the woeful Euro squad we have, and the injuries.

So without further ado:

Butland, obviously. The one shining star this season.

Defence.

Ok, so no Balogun, because he’s not in the squad, but Sterling is. Souttar also is, and so is Barisic. Sadly, the other three are Tav, Goldson and Davies, but honestly we’d rather see none of them in our shirt again. We’re not super thrilled about Borna either but there’s a lack of options here thanks to Ridvan’s omission.

Midfield:

We only have Cifuentes, Jack and Lundstram fit – Nico Raskin is on the flight but it may come too soon?

Attack:

Ok way over encumbered here and yet ironically underpowered:

Cyriel Dessers, Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers, Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, Danilo, Kemar Roofe, Abdallah Sima, Scott Wright – now, only Dessers, Lammers, Sima and Wright are actually available of this lot so we have a desperately slim selection.

So what would we/Davo do?

We’re gonna be bold, and we know some quarters will abuse us over it, so we’ll take that on the chin.

Sterling RB, Barisic LB.

CBs – Lundstram and Souttar.

Midfield – Jack and Cifuentes holding, or Raskin, if amazingly fit.

Wings: Wright and Sima.

Strikers: Lammers behind Dessers.

That’s right, we’d go mad with a bold flat 4-4-2 old-school winger-style system.

So:

Butland; Sterling, Lundstram, Souttar, Barisic; Wright, Jack, Cifuentes, Sima; Lammers, Dessers.

It’s not great, we admit it’s not great, and yes, that’s John Lundstram in defence.

We barely even care if we win, we are just utterly done with Tav, Goldson and Davies, if they never play for Rangers again it’s too soon. Lunny has a bit of experience at CB so to hell with it, what we got to lose sticking him in defence.

And with the old-school wide men and two holding men in the middle, it’s very retro and unlike formations from recent years.

It can’t be any worse than the rubbish we’ve been served up, and of course, we’d 100% restore Balogun (and Ridvan) for league duty.

Is it mad? Maybe. But it’s a free hit for Davo anyway. No one is going to judge him.
