What does Brendan Rodgers’ return mean for Rangers?

So now it’s official, Celtic’s panic over Michael Beale and Rangers’ rebuild has led them to what they believe is the ‘safe’ option by bringing in disgraced and fired Brendan Rodgers, career managerial failure outside of beating a Matt Crooks-infused Ibrox side managed by a Wall Street Accountant.

Ok, having gotten the tribal immaturity out of the way, what does Rodgers’ return really mean for Rangers?

The brutal truth, and most Celtic fans know it, is the Rangers side he overcame was tripe. Simple as that, it was a garbage and horrendous side that had only been promoted 18 months earlier and was nowhere near fit for purpose at all.

Here’s a lineup Mr Rodgers overcame:

Foderingham, Tavernier, McCrorie, Martin, Declan John; Docherty, Halliday; Murphy, Dorrans, Candeias, Morelos.

Meanwhile he had Gordon, Tierney, Boyata, Ajer, Lustig, Ntcham, Brown, Forrest, Rogic, McGregor and Dembele.

Is anyone going to say that’s an even fight with a straight face?

The reality is things are different now. Rodgers is coming back when Rangers are much, much stronger. Are we the finished product? No, but you’d have to be crazy to think Andy Halliday, bless him, is a match for Nico Raskin, or that Graeme Dorrans was the same quality as Todd Cantwell.

While our manager, Mr Warburton, or Murty, or Pedro, or an easing into it Gerrard, was hardly a major juggernaut either… these are the obstacles which stood in Rodgers’ way.

That Scotland’s second-best team at the time was Aberdeen tells you a lot about the rank-rotten Rangers he faced.

Things are different, as we say. Michael Beale has a much more Rangers-like budget, and has a much more Rangers-like team. Not perfect, we still think Hutton and Stevens wipe the floor with Tavernier, and there are weak spots elsewhere, but compared with Declan John at left back we’re literally in a different league nowadays.

What does Brendan Rodgers’ return mean? It means we get to roll up our sleeves and take the fight to a man whose fans wanted him buried alive only 2 years ago.

We think it’ll be fun.

  3. I mind Dorrans coming and thinking “right now we’re talkin” then seeing him trying to turn 180° on the ball and it was like watchin a double decker bus turning and then me feelin let down wasnt the word lol. Not to slag him cos he was a gd player im his prime, would have loved him in his prime, but it was obv he was passed retirement date when we got him.

  4. I always loved Candeias though. He never stopped running, gave his heart every game. And that back heel in the euro game to set up one of the goals i cant remember against who but he done a back heel sort of through ball against Werder Bremen im guessing, and someone else finished it off. I wonder if he keeps an eye on us. I try keep an eye out for his new teams goals Atlantyspor. He gets a lot game time with them. Either 60mins or gamr from start.

    • He was above average – technically excellent but lacking a lot else. And that day he was torn to shreds by Kierney showed the gulf at the time.

  5. Totally brilliant its going to be fun . Brenda will get 20 mill plus to spend but Beale has the mind games to beat him as he proved with Gerrard. I look forward to watching him crash and burn . The Famous rightly back where we belong .
