Rangers are set to announce Todd Cantwell inside the next 48 hours after several sources confirmed talks between the two parties have not only taken place but were positive and should lead to a resolution imminently.

Norwich City have confirmed the midfielder will leave, and during this window, and various sources have now confirmed Ibrox is the destination with just the medical and contract to sort out. Cantwell’s price to be freed this month will be modest, given his market value under normal circumstances is in the £10M+ range.

Cantwell will be Rangers’ first signing of this window and is an excellent start – a ‘nowhere man’ with so much talent but whose time at Carrow Road just went south. Think Nathan Patterson at Ibrox – top class player but Rangers couldn’t (refused to) find a solution to use him so he moved to Everton.

Cantwell has tonnes of quality, but it’s just not worked out in Norwich, and he seeks a new challenge.

Rangers are getting a player with everything to prove yet nothing to prove – anyone who knows him, knows Norwich, knows the quality he has, he’s just been unable to find a way under David Wagner or Dean Smith before him to channel his abilities.

Now, we’re not immediately going to say he’s an instant starter, because we said that about Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz, and neither of them was installed in the XI immediately. But at the same time this is a player Michael Beale really really likes and really really wants so we don’t see his arrival in Govan as anything other than a first team player.

Rangers should announce him by around Monday but don’t quote us on that – end of the day multiple sources have him confirmed as coming north and we’re running with that.

He will strengthen Rangers a lot but we have a fair bit of analysis about the impact Todd Cantwell joining Rangers at Ibrox will have on the rest of the bluenose squad, with one player in particular to suffer more than most. Stay tuned to find out who that will be.
