Last night we saw Rangers’ rearguard truly exposed for the mess that it is, as Queen of the South, the 12th-worst team in Scotland, scored against our reserves.
Look, the signs were obvious. If there is no Goldson or Sands, we literally have no defenders. They are the only two fit and available CBs in the entire squad at present. And one of them is a midfielder! A gamble we don’t need, visit this page for more.
Which makes the apparent decision to dump Niko Katic even more bizarre.
We get that Gio likes a lefty and a righty, but if we remove the two current first picks, there’s absolutely no one else.
Leon King is still a bit raw, and that’s all there is.
John Souttar and Ben Davies have issues, Filip Helander is injured until further notice and Leon Balogun plays for the other Rangers now.
So Katic would have been very handy as a reserve, as depth, but instead, we saw Ryan Jack as a CB last night.
Fair play, we got through but the defence wasn’t convincing. And that’s the point – the reserve depth isn’t there, and we have no options to bring on if we lose a man.
And we’ll have even less when Katic leaves, as is looking inevitable, whether it’s to Haifa, or Zurich, or anyone else.
It’s not all doom and gloom, we’re not in the worst place we’ve ever been, but there’s a feeling we’re just a bit thin throughout the squad for depth, with just one striker, an aging midfield, and a lack of CBs.
If Gio thinks it’s enough going forward, we kowtow to his judgement.
But we can’t help feeling we’re one more injury away from a crisis.
