Rangers have this morning been linked with Liverpool defender Ben Davies, 26, as a replacement for Calvin Bassey who will seal his Ajax move in the next 36 hours.

The English defender, who has never actually played for the Anfield side, is versatile in playing both LB and CB and is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Bassey, albeit he may not be quite the first-pick in the same way.

Contracted for another 3 years, Davies has seen loans at York, Southport and Fleetwood, and we admit he’s hardly a marquee addition on the face of it. He’s experienced in the Championship but then that’s where we signed Tom Lawrence from so there’s a pattern here.

Bodies are certainly required – the initial £20M rising to £25M rising to £30M for Bassey means GVB has a bit of spending power now, and needs pretty swiftly to fill some vacancies in the squad.

We can’t pretend to be excited by Davies, and his CV is nothing to crow about, but in Gio We Trust and if he’s good enough for the manager he’s good enough for us.

  1. Don’t fancy this fellow. I’m sure we could find somebody better and not tainted with Liverpoolness. I hope we are looking further ahead at another CH and another striker too.

  2. He was signed as a bit of an emergency signing by Liverpool but even so if he was deemed good enough for Liverpool then that’ll do me. As long as we, and he, realise that he’s not a “proper” Liverpool or EPL player and therefore can’t justify ridiculous wages.

  3. Must admit dont know anything about the guy ,however at the same time I cannot think of anyone who would be a replacement for bassey especially with our budget ,so good luck and welcome ben ! .
