‘Calvin Cash’ kills Rangers’ financial issues for good

We told you in January that the sale of Nathan Patterson had now changed the Rangers Rules on transfers, that we were now showing what we would accept for players and not a penny less.

And while we’ve had a lot to say on this board and our disquiet about it, we have to hold our hands up and admit they’ve made good on our promise.

First it was Patterson – initial £12M rising to £16M.

Then it was Joe Aribo – initial £6M rising to £10M.

Now it’s Bassey – Initial £20M rising to £25M then to £30M with sell on.

In short, forget Dembele Dollars – it’s now Calvin Cash, as Rangers finally start getting fair market value for our players and not selling for sub-standard levels.

Our piece earlier on Bassey being undersold was unfair and a little premature, and based on some inaccurate numbers, so we retract a lot of the sentiment in that one – and in fairness, we did say we hoped the numbers we were getting were wrong.

No, the only one anyone might whine about is Aribo – but final year of his deal, and Rangers still got an eventual £10M for him. It’s not bad.

As we said in another earlier piece, it’s a combined total of £56M in 7 months which no Scottish club has ever done before.

And in one fell swoop all Rangers’ financial issues are gone.

All we need to do is secure that UCL spot (no mean feat) and that adds another £40M and hey presto, around £130M in 9 months.

We now sell players for serious money, no longer pawning them.

It took a long time, but never again will sides get players on the cheap from Glasgow Rangers FC.

  2. Great news !! Hopefully the manager gets something to spend ASAP to get through these qualifiers.A CB, LB, AM, 2 right wingers, striker.

  3. The Aribo deal isn’t as bad as it looks though if the £10m release clause in his contract is true. Last year of his contract and we got 60% of his release clause up front and should still get to the full £10m if the addons are achievable.

  4. It’s all so very encouraging and just what we are due. Let’s get CL done too then we are totally back where we belong . We will show the rotten mob no respect and put them back in their place 2nd in all aspects Class Ability and European and World standing and us in our true place . Simply the Best WATP

  5. I’m still not with you on this one. For me Bassey was an easy £25m plus add ons plus sell on. Ajax are forking out a little bit more than HALF what they got for the player that Bassey is replacing. Nice bit of business for AJAX. If we are truly to deal at “new prices” then we need to be prepared to walk away when the deal doesn’t meet what we really want.
The problem with add ons is that they might never be realised. I’m presuming the add ons for Patterson were based on games played. If so we might never see those targets realised as things stand. Sure £4m add ons sounds great but not if we’re never going to see the money.
As for Aribo you’ll see Championship players moving for twice what we got for him. Being in the last 12 months is a problem but it didn’t stop Celtic getting top dollar for their players.

    • Ajax can afford to sell for more – they always have Rob – de Ligt went for £65M. Not even Celtic could get half that for their best player.

    • I agree Robrob57 I know it’s good business for Ajax but I suppose we don’t want to get too greedy . I do think we could play a little more hard ball in certain circumstances though. I hope this spurs Morelos and Kent on to sign their new respective deals and do the same .

  6. Well, why can’t we aford to sell for more? As you say, our debts have been wiped out so why not sell for what the players are actually worth rather than constantly being a soft touch and selling for much less than the true values of the players? I am not happy with this deal, especially with vital Euro qualifiers, and the start of the league, just two short weeks away. The mhanky mob sell duds like Ajer, Ping pong, Dumbelle and Eduoard, who had clearly chucked it, for fortunes and biscuit hips Tierney for £25 million. Why do we accept far less for our top top players?

      • Apologies, I.N. A little response along the lines of “still being moderated” would have helped”. I assure you, I have no sense of entitlement.

        • While sounding entitled expecting your comment to be processed with commentary and full updates.

  7. I am with few of the guys ,slightly underwhelmed with figures 18.7 million rising to 22.9 IF certain conditions met plus POSSIBLE sell on .Think we should have told Ajax 25 million plus 10 percent sell on or do one like the smelly mob did with Tierney ,.I guess I listened to press nonsense too much about us banking 30 million .It won’t look such a great deal if that mob run amok over barrisic in first old firm game ,so heres hoping this boy from Liverpool good and barrisic regains form ,we have banked 6 million and 11.5 for Paterson good business especially for Patterson .
