While there’s a tonne of hype over Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos’ respective contract situations, they’re not the only Rangers players out of contract next summer.
Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Filip Helander, Nikola Katic, Robby McCrorie, Glenn Middleton, Jake Hastie, James Sands and Stephen Kelly are the other notable men on the roster whose deals expire next year, and while the attention is on the marquee trio and their futures, there are a few stand out names in here worth noting.
Jack and Helander are clearly the main two, and we’d be very surprised if they’re offered an extension.
We’ve heard whispers from unreliable sources that Jack is due to get an extension, but nothing we can verify, and like his Swedish team mate has major injury issues so if Leon Balogun wasn’t getting a new deal, we’d be extremely surprised if Jack or Helander do.
In their cases, it’s all down to injury – Helander has produced a feeble 69 appearances in 3 seasons with Rangers. His Rangers stint has been injury wrecked and that’s not value for money.
Jacko is the same – he’s played more, but still has missed a tonne of action and cannot be relied upon.
This is not to poo poo their ability – both are fine players, like Balogun, but like Balogun, can’t seem to keep fit.
As for Arfield and Davis? Getting on a bit, and they’re a season-by-season case, where we will clearly play their careers by ear.
The rest are pretty much dead wood – as we told you before, Rangers are looking to cut loose most of them, sadly including, as we understand, Niko Katic, whatever we think of the Croat.
But there are many contracts to sort and squad filler to trim.
We shall see how it goes.
