There’s no question a lot of head scratching has been taking place over Connor Goldson’s new deal.
Doing nothing himself to quell the speculation, Goldson never once committed himself to staying at Ibrox, and until this left field signature, the stopper was leaving.
The info ultimately was wrong, but there’s no denying it was absolutely on the cards for months and he’d done zero to suggest that was incorrect.
He even said a cryptic goodbye with a suggestive post on Instagram – one which appreciated the past but said nothing about staying.
Borna Barisic, by comparison, vividly said he was looking forward to next season, with no apparent intention of leaving, but Goldson had none of that.
So what changed?
There are three ways of looking at this.
1: He quite simply changed his mind, and has decided his future lies with Rangers after all. His family are said to be settled in Scotland, and he was ooing and aahing about moving but ultimately decided staying was the better option. He’s allowed to change his mind, in fairness.
2: He’s signed a deal to ensure Rangers get a fee in event of him leaving, but let’s face it, no one has offered anything for him so that’s unlikely. Maybe Forest are about to submit an offer, we couldn’t possibly tell you. All bets are off.
3: He waited on offers, didn’t get anything he liked, so stayed. Simple as.
What we do know is Goldson was leaving, 100%, till he wasn’t.
And that’s really all we can say.
We must admit a spot of amusement at the hate-filled replies to our ‘how will you remember him’ post of a few days ago, where every man and his dog was abusing Goldson, and are now celebrating his new deal!
End of the day, we’re not fussed – we’re not giant fans of his overall ability, but we do recognise he’s been an integral part of the club for 4 years.
He is now likely to partner John Souttar in the heart of defence is what probably will be Rangers’ backline duo.
We also have Filip Helander, Calvin Bassey (for now), and Niko Katic (welcome back). Leon Balogun, unlike Goldson, Davis and Arfield, has not put pen to paper yet but hey, that will probably happen too!
We don’t pretend we get everything right on Ibrox Noise, we’re human and we’ll get things wrong.
But we’re pretty sure up until very recently, Goldson WAS leaving…
Not once did goldson or club announce he was leaving ,that aside ,great business from club .It saves them losing a 4-5 millon player for nowt and means they have a solid reliable ever present player to pick, albeit prone to odd lapse in concentration ,but then again shortage of good defenders about ,for me soutar not the answer, too injury prone .Lookout for katic and goldson as a partnership with souter etc as back up .
I was really hoping my dream of Katic/Souttar partnership would come true for next season lol.
Not happy and a little bemused , OK I agree it would cost to replace him but he will get it right up him if he makes another Seville type fuck up….welll see
Bill he will continue to make mistakes. That’s not knocking him it’s just the reality of playing in Scotland. Goldson is a more than decent centre back and if he didn’t have the odd mistake in him he would already be playing at a higher level.
But i thought he’d even flogged his house,maybe he just didnt like the area😂

A back three of Souttar, Goldson and Bassey sounds just fine to me.
Other than the comment te Soutar I agree with Stuart A. I am hopeful that he and Goldson will be a very good partnership.
Fantastic news, our player of the year in the title winning season never put a foot wrong. Never underestimate the importance of a centre half who can play week in week out.
Very happy that CG is staying and never doubted him.
I’ve said for a few weeks that he might stay simply because he didn’t get any suitable offers. I think that’s what has happened here. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’m hope now that he has settled his future he will get back to his top form.
