Hadjuk Split have rejected Niko Katic’s £3M purchase clause and the big Croat will return to Rangers this summer, despite an impressive spell in his homeland including a cup triumph (albeit he is injured).

We don’t know if he explicably didn’t impress them, they couldn’t afford the fee, or they decided against it based on his injury, but he will be back in Govan imminently alongside new defensive recruit John Souttar.

It means, amid Connor Goldson’s impending exit, Rangers’ defensive options change up somewhat, and as things currently stand, it’s Souttar, Katic, Bassey and Helander at the back, with fellow stopper Leon Balogun also hoping for a new deal with nothing set in stone there. He’s out of contract.

As for Katic?

We’re undecided on him. It’s a new era under Gio, and things have changed a bit. We loved him back in the day but Rangers moved on – Katic never really made the big leap forward we expected, and the fact he wasn’t recalled in January said a lot.

As does Split letting him go back to Scotland.

We’ll see how it evolves, but as we said before, defence is a huge area of flux this summer.
