Overreaction must stop after Rangers’ bad night

It’s the morning after the night before, and we have to admit the reaction from a hell of a lot of Rangers fans has been OTT, unfair, revisionist, and unkind. Let’s be clear, the first half last night was a literal disgrace, and all the damage was done there, but the second half WAS a notable improvement, even if it was too little too late.

But the comments since full time and still continuing from many this morning see Gio been pillared, compared with appalling managers of the past, and generally being blamed for everything.

He got last night wrong, yes, and we were a bit disappointed he failed to take any responsibility for that, but he’s still learning. But the number of people who have exalted ‘one league season wonder’ Steven Gerrard into being the greatest manager Rangers have ever had suggesting he would never have allowed his Rangers side to play that badly despite the fact that, well, he did, many times, is a gross insult to Gio, and to Walter Smith, who seems, right now, not to be the benchmark of Rangers’ class with the honour going to a treacherous Scouser instead.

We’re actually more gutted by fan reaction than by the performance – at least the second half was a big improvement, even if the guillotine had come down in the first half – but as bad as that first 45 was, the lack of support from so many fans after full time and continuing this morning is infinitely worse than the result.

Gio getting it in the neck, players being slaughtered as garbage and instantly binned – we aren’t going to turn last night from a trainwreck into a stunning display, but the players were nowhere near as abysmal as fans want to say they were, fans who seem oblivious to that superior second half and have only measured on the first 45.

Over the 90, our player ratings last night were fair, but many supporters only acknowledge the first 45 where the match was, admittedly lost.

As for Gio, yeah he ballsed up that first half and made the rookie error of blaming the players solely and not taking anything on his own shoulders. We love him, and we support him, but we will always be fair and honest, unlike the reaction of many fans the past 12+ hours.

So maybe it’s time to get a grip, as you readers always instruct us to – a bad night, a lesson learned, and hopefully grown from.

Rangers are a much better team than we showed last night, Gio a better manager than he showed.

We lick our wounds and we beat Hearts. Simple as that.

  1. The only reason we played better is because the job was done on us, celtic took the foot off the gas it was obvious. They still could have scored a few in the 2nd half. I dont blame Gio, it’s the players i blame. Our CB doesnt even want to be there, we have a wee boy on loan frm a really poor Man U side. We should hv paid what hearts wanted and had Soutter in on tht window. Also its time we install a new captain. Not a one that “leads by example” but an old school one tht screams and shouts and gets respect.

    • For the weekend we should have Balogun, Jack and Morelos back, thats the spine of our team we have been deprived of for far too long. In the next week, we should put Hearts and the spoonburners back in their place. If we don’t, then it’s time to start worrying.

Septic beat us on their own patch for the first time in 4 attempts since March 2019. We beat them twice in a row there. To put that into perspective, prior to that, we’d only won there 5 times? since the year 2000. Win’s at the piggery are few and far between. We were spoiled last year with the whitewash and being invincible in the league, some people need to get a fucking grip thinking thats going to continue.

It hurts, of course it does. I’m not going to shout for Gios head but, yes he fucked it not starting Jack/Balogun and leaving Ramsay in the stands. But did anyone expect Borna to be that fuckin bad? Of course you did JT. Aribo makes that pass for 1-1 that game would never have went that way.
They can only run like that for 45mins and will still rely on 90+ min winners, which they won’t always get. 2 last minute winners fucked us more last week than this result.

Get a grip boys, get behind YOUR team and stop acting like the self-entitled dhims did for 9.5 years.

  2. Good article IN. I am one of the guilty who over reacted. Thing is though I saw this happening in December when the filth managed to stop the league early – when they did not fancy playing Rangers a month ago.

  3. OK let’s try and move forward. However we have individuals in our midst who are not acting like professionals and are disgracing our great club . GVB has had his wake up call. Let’s be totally honest when you look at the first 2 goals the Japanese hit and hoped like he did against Hearts. We should have defended that . I hurt like hell watching that last night , yes we need to move on . Onwards 56. They are still not that good let’s be honest we let them play for 20 minutes with no opposition. GVB we support you .

  4. I was one Rangers supporter who shrugged it of as blip. I watched the second half and still thought we could win this. Tactics were wrong. Pressing non. Players of the pace first half. All true in the first half. I’m still positive. We dropped points in Dingwall Celtic took 98 mins to get a goal there. Other teams will take points of them. We have got to play them twice nothing is lost.

  5. I was gutted and angry last night not because we lost, not because we lost 3-0, but the manner in which we lost so easily and meekly. This result was probably coming but I genuinely didn’t think it would be last night, in the same way I never saw the Hampden defeat to Hibs coming. There is a general malaise in our players all season that concerns me. Hopefully Gio can get it sorted. But we move on. As I said last night we could’ve played very really well and lost 2-1 and the league table would look exactly the same this morning.
