“Absolute shocker – 1” Rangers players rated at Parkhead
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - FEBRUARY 02: Borna Barisic of Rangers battes for the ball with Giorgos Giakoumakis of Celtic during the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC and Rangers FC at on February 02, 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Mark Runnacles/Getty Images)

Painfully, Rangers got a lesson tonight in tactics and application as we fell 3-0 at Parkhead. Ibrox Noise takes you through (maybe slightly pointlessly) our ratings for a horrible evening in the east.

McGregor:

Pulled out some textbook big saves, bailing his team mates out a few times, but seemed surprisingly easily beaten for the first two goals. Kicking was suspect, and was overused as an ‘outfield’ player with too many balls back to him. 6

Tavernier:

Shambolic ‘passback’ which opened the door for Celtic, and nearly cost a goal. Crossing was mediocre, with just 2 decent ones of 11 attempts, but did at least try to get forward and create something. Defensively suspect and in many ways this was the old Tav reappearing. 6

Goldson:

Horrible moment in the first half of dallying, waiting till Celtic man was on him then tried to clear only to smack it off the attacker and put his side in danger. Guilty of far too much pondering on the ball, and distribution was lazy. This was the pre-55 Goldson all the way. 5

Bassey:

Extremely vulnerable, and while his passing wasn’t that bad, his defending was naïve and he just can’t read games at this level in the CH position. We protested hugely about him ahead of Leon Balogun pre-match, assuming Gio would select the best man he had. He didn’t. Massive boost in the second half when he went to his native LB position and he was infinitely more solid. 6

Barisic:

Rangers players having the worst nights of their careers must be contagious, because after Greegsy’s nightmare in Dingwall, Barisic had an absolute shocker here. Cowardly play where he rarely advanced forward, resorting to passbacks most times, and couldn’t connect at all with Kent. One useless backflick went out of play, summing up a horror show from him. Three attempts at a cross, none came close to being useful. Rightly hooked at half time. 1

Kamara:

Some disagree, but we felt he had a very good first half – didn’t lose the ball like others, was solid in possession, and a 100% passing rate demonstrates how clean he was. Got in a lot of tackles and interceptions and definitely wasn’t the worst offender on the pitch. Can hold his head higher than most. A little unfortunate to be removed. 7

Arfield:

Another one who worked hard to make things happen, but was let down by those around him. Dug at things, and tried to open the space around him. He showed guts alright and played well. 7

Kent:

Really struggled – tried hard, made a lot of runs, and hit as many shots as he could. Unfairly lambasted for effort but Celtic closed him down constantly and mostly had 2 or three men on him. He was suffocated but didn’t hide. 6

Aribo:

Off the pace, head still in Africa, with that slower pace, the wrong match for him to return to, Aribo looked lost and didn’t seem to know what role he was playing. Mismanaged and wasted, but did make a hash of one through ball which had too much weight for Scotty to connect with. His worst performance since his rise the past year, but not really his fault. Starved of much service. 5

Diallo:

After such an impressive debut v County, Diallo was brought to earth with a bang. Seemed a rabbit in headlights at times, but that said he did try to weave damage into Celtic’s backline – another one starved of service, but was not able to impact this one. Celtic did a number on this kid like they did Kent. 5

Roofe:

Literally choked – wasn’t given any football oxygen, zero service, and had absolutely no impact whatsoever. Had to come deeper to get any of the ball. 3

Subs:

Jack:

By a country mile the best player for the side. Completely re-energised midfield, brought structure, and worked like the dog we know he does. Already become undroppable after this display. 9

Sakala:

Put in a shift, did more damage than Diallo and tried to make things happen. 7

Balogun:

Should have been there from the start, Rangers didn’t look as threatened with him next to Goldson. 7

Gio:

Ah Gio, your rep has taken a hit lately. Some questionable decisions and some clear errors have brought the honeymoon to an end. We were shocked pre-match when he confessed the striker choice had been between Roofe and Itten, with Sakala not even in that picture. He got this match plainly wrong, and he must learn from it. Made good changes at half time but it was too late. Thankfully he can move forward with a tonne of our players coming back from injury and that will help a lot. One to take on the chin and grow from. 3

  1. I agree with your markings. Only Kamara and Arfield tried to play their normal game but were badly let down by those around them. Balogun showed that he should’ve played from the start and Jack embarrassed his team mates with the way he applied himself the second half. The rest were not worthy of the shirt. The end of the season in May is looking a long way away.
PS: I’m thinking of complaining to Sky about the disgraceful co-commentary of tonight’s match……and I’m talking about Ally McCoist. Does anyone know if he’s come down from Andy Wanker’s arse yet. Sometimes it’s better to say nothing or just point out how badly we played. His fawning worship of Celtic’s performance was a disgrace and he should be thoroughly ashamed. He actually seemed to be enjoying it and how he could laugh afterwards is beyond me. Do you think Wanker or Sutton would have reacted the same way had the roles been reversed. Never!

  2. After the next 2 games septic will 7 points clear cos that shower of shite wont beat hearts or hibs,Gio better learn fast or hes out the fkn door i said he was a mistake from the start no balls and weak,
