While fans are all slating everything last night, we at Ibrox Noise want to continue our more ‘calm’ reaction to what happened at Parkhead, by pointing out all the positives from a difficult evening in the east end of Glasgow.

So, we bring you, ‘7 things to be positive about after yesterday’.

1: Ryan Jack. Obviously, this was the big headline. The incredible midfielder, by some distance Rangers’ best player on the night, back in full flow and looking 100% like his old self. What a remarkable difference to the middle Jacko’s return made – from clueless and lost, it regained shape, discipline, and work ethic. He even hit the bar with a scorching drive. Jack was outstanding, and showed what we’ve missed. Welcome back, and please God stay fit. Undroppable.

2: Calvin Bassey is our best LB. Borna Barisic has been a little off colour this year and while a bit better under Gio he’s just not been as expansive and impressive as the ex-Leicester man when in the right slot. Bassey at LB in the second half was a major reason Celtic’s threat on the right stopped, and we’d say Barisic can remain on the bench till his hunger returns. Bassey has proven himself in that position.

3: Leon Balogun’s return. Oh this was welcome. A huge error not starting him given his colossal impact v them last year, but it was glorious to finally have a proper defender and not someone who’s a rookie there and who hates the slot. Balogun shored up the backline and looked solid.

4: Scotty Arfield continues to wear that shirt with pride, and was one of Rangers’ best performers (albeit the bar was low in the first half). He worked, made things happen, and tried honourably. If that pass from Aribo had been better weighted, it was 1-1. Different game.

5: Gio’s willingness to be ruthless and make sweeping changes. And they did work, just not enough. Gio got it wrong in the first half, but his changes at half time did alter the match, even if it wasn’t sufficient. We need a boss who isn’t afraid to dump favourites and makes switches if needed, Gio seems capable of it.

6: Allan McGregor looked a bit more like himself, and pulled off some fine saves to stop the result being worse. Sure, he was a little shaky otherwise and might have done better with the goals but he did show he can still deliver at this level. He can hold his head high and has recovered in part from the County disaster.

7: Returning players. This is the best bit. Only Filip Helander is currently unavailable for the weekend, with Morelos being back in time. We can see the difference the big players make for this side when they are available, and the second half last night was a preview of that.

Many fans want to wallow in misery, but we’re just not up for that, sorry.

  1. I agree, it’s maybe the wake up call we needed, we have players who for whatever reason haven’t been performing, we got a first half mauling with a better second half, nothing has been lost except last night’s match albeit to that mob, its only 1pt with 15 games left, let’s see what we’re made of and I hope GVB can get it going again.

  2. I agree with 1,2,3,4 and 6. As for 5 if Gio was as ruthless as you suggest he would’ve had Barisic off after 20 minutes and maybe avoided the tragic 3rd goal. And 7? If you are hoping that the return of Morelos will change things drastically you might be disappointed. It depends on which Morelos returns from Columbia.
