This is a rare occasion we’ll do an entry on Steven Gerrard, our former manager.

We’re not interested in ‘move on, he’s gone ffs’ replies, if you’re not interested in the topic, just close your browser and move on with your life.

But there’s a bit of a mixed bag in this analysis, and it’s something we’ve been meaning to look at for a while.

Following Rangers’ historic win in Dortmund, to his absolute credit Gerrard, for the first time since leaving, aside his departure statement, said something positive and decent about Rangers, showing us some respect in congratulating us for that win then defending doing so and doubling down on it when quizzed.

For the first time since he moved on, Ibrox Noise’s hardline view of him softened about 1%, which is better than nothing. He didn’t have to say anything, but he did, and it was respectful, supportive and decent.

It didn’t go as far as most ex-bosses or players do, by saying he’s still a supporter or that the club is great (Remember at one point he claimed he was half and half these days?), but he at least came out with something half decent.

On the flip side, though, he’s struggling in his job now.

The Villa honeymoon is over, just like Gio’s Rangers one is, and Gerrard has just one point of the last 9, with results tumbling dramatically.

The first thing we noticed after the Newcastle result was what one comment on the page observed – just like at Rangers, he was quick to throw his players under the bus. He didn’t take any responsibility and blamed them for the bad result.

The thing is though just like at Rangers he’d then follow that up with a spot of doing the opposite, saying it’s on him, after, this time, losing at home to Watford.

From what we understand, Villa fans aren’t terribly impressed at the moment with him, and some of the failings which derailed his Rangers era are starting to creep into Villa Park too.

Our honest take? He’s not one of us, has never spoken well about us aside when he was manager, and used us as a stepping stone. He did what he set out to do, break Celtic’s dominance. He took longer than he’d have wanted, putting them perilously close to getting 10, but he achieved his two basic objectives – winning the league and regaining credibility in Europe.

Do we wish him well or badly? Just like Warby, he left in shambolic circumstances, and that takes time to heal.

The Magic Hat did, however, very quickly show nothing but respect and support for Rangers, always speaking well of us, even if the manner of his exit was as toxic as Gerrard’s. That’s why we don’t mind him too much.

But SG barely has anything to say about us, and clearly isn’t that interested in us.

He moved on, and so did we.

But that all said, what’s happening at Villa now is very much what happened at Ibrox in the end, and before 55.

It doesn’t seem like he actually learned that much at all.

Still, he’ll get Liverpool one day, right?

  1. Have to agree with the comparison. GVB has a delivery record and a more extensive CV. Let’s move on , he cares not much for Rangers . Liverpool….just look at how Klopp manages them , especially the young players….I don’t think so Stevie
