9 players at Ibrox are out of contract this summer. And only ONE of them has been offered a new deal, that deal having been offered last spring.

Ibrox Noise takes you through all the personnel looking for either a new deal, a new club, or retirement.

Allan McGregor:

He’s not been as focused this season, until Gio arrived. Has absolutely no intention of joining any other side and with Craig Gordon, also 39, having just signed a new two-year deal at Hearts, could Greegsy consider a shock new contract? There’s no denying if/when Rangers win 56, McGregor would give anything for one last shot at the Champions League.

Jon McLaughlin:

Not good enough as a number one at our club, but isn’t said to be content any more with being a number two, despite being signed for that purpose. Is unlikely to be offered a new deal.

Connor Goldson:

We’ve covered this one. There’s no need to keep harking on about his situation.

Steven Davis:

Played very little since Gio arrived, the manager preferring Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield of late. Davo is aging and having just turned 37, he isn’t the future. Unlikely to be offered a new deal as a player, but could go into coaching?

Jermain Defoe:

Is he even a Rangers player any more? On a hefty wage, there is more chance of yours truly becoming Prime Minister than Defoe being offered a new deal. Loved by the fans, but he’s been drifting away from Rangers pretty much since we won 55.

Scott Arfield:

Not getting a lot younger at 33, but still has a few years left and has proven his fitness. Gio likes him and has started seeing his worth in recent times, Scotty is likely to get another year. He’s certainly keen.

Brandon Barker:

Gio has no interest in him, and he won’t get a new deal.

Andy Firth:

Same as Barker.

Leon Balogun:

Sadly unable to sustain fitness ever since he joined Rangers (yet another Dorrans, Rossiter, Eustace, you name it) he probably won’t get a new deal. Despite being impressive when he is fit.

The only one of all these realistically likely to get new terms as a player is Arfield (aside Goldson, of course), with mentions towards McGregor and Davis (more likely as coach).

Rangers have quite a lot of trimming to do this year.

  1. This is actually quite worrying. Regardless of their importance, it will take millions to replace 9 players. As far I’m concerned it’s vital we keep one of our main two goalkeepers, Arfield and Balogun. That’s also assuming Goldson is already gone!
