Steven Gerrard has dropped a big hint that he expects new signing Fashion Sakala to be a big player for Rangers next season after observing the Zambian forward will be giving Rangers a tonne more pace in attack, implying that he doesn’t think there’s enough of that at present.
Sakala, 24, had a fine campaign in Belgium with Oostende and will join with his new team mates this summer, but Gerrard’s comment more than suggested that there is currently a lack of pace at the front, and he’d be absolutely correct.
When we look at the options in attack, the only quick player is Ryan Kent. Roofe, Morelos, Wright Defoe, and Itten are not regarded as especially zippy, and adding some quick feet in there is certainly a boost.
Sakala is all about movement, and hard work, not to mention his raw speed, and Gerrard may well be looking at him playing on the right a lot, possibly swapping with the other two attackers for position.
His main position though is certainly striker, with only a minority of starts on the wings, but he’s also extremely flexible and is known to drift.
Either way, we’re clearly going to see a lot of our new hitman.
