Prior to today’s win over Hibernian, Steven Gerrard dropped a doozy by revealing contract extension Leon Balogun is already pretty much out for the season after picking up an injury in training, more or less immediately following his signature.

Stevie’s announcement of this was laced with some irony and amused bitterness by suggesting the new wage had broken the lad and he was weighed down by the money, causing this latest ailment to put him out for some weeks, the number of which is undetermined as yet.

It’s certainly typical for Rangers, and Balogun’s career – we were pleased enough to secure him for longer, but he cannot be relied on for availability due to his persistent injury niggles which frequently lay him out for a number of weeks at a time.

There’s no denying his quality and experience, and leadership attributes, but sadly Rangers’ extension on him was a bit of a risk given his injury history, and for now that’s slightly blown up in our face.

Hopefully this won’t have him out too long – but it could in part explain why Rangers are already looking for new blood in defence, with Dijon’s Senou Coulibaly reportedly interesting our management team.

Time will tell.
