Steven Gerrard’s injury troubles have returned following not only Borna Barisic’s knee injury subject to scan, but the manager’s confirmation neither Cedric Itten nor Jermain Defoe are back to full training. This strongly implies strongly both players will not be fit in time for the manager’s clash with Utd.

Joe Aribo, also, was not at training this week suggesting Gerrard’s positive prognosis for him and the other two has sadly not been realised and all three will still be unavailable, and with Borna Barisic’s diagnosis not yet known, Rangers could be hit with an unwanted four-man blow for this one.

Of course, Barisic’s absence will give Calvin Bassey a chance to prove he can deputise in that position, while Scott Arfield will likely continue in the 10 position in Aribo’s absence with Ianis Hagi or Brandon Barker wide right, and Kemar Roofe up top.

This, thankfully, is why our manager has built up a stronger squad, a deeper squad this season.

With a bit of an injury spread currently maligning the squad, this is the depth coming into play.

No one would pretend Bassey is a like-for-like replacement for Barisic, but he was signed to compete, if not more, and it’s time he demonstrated why his manager wanted him.

It is, however, a big shame to see potentially four key injuries afflicting the squad at an unwanted time, and hopefully the results will not be affected.

We just hope the recoveries as swift and we have all four back ASAP.

  1. Why does it always seem to take our players much longer to recover from seemingly minor injuries? Fortunately we seem to be well covered but we are always being told so and so will miss the next match only to see them miss the next 5 or 6.

  2. Agree with Robrob57 it does seem we lose players to minor ? injuries quite frequently . Perhaps it just seems that way but it must be infuriating for SG and his team to get the consistency he is always seeking . Lets hope they are all fit soon. It does show however we are short of quality though in some positions , LB, Striker ,Creative Midfield . More work to be done in the transfer market to really get set for 55
