“Colossal night – 9” – player ratings for Rangers v Legia

Rangers definitely found themselves up against a side who don’t concede much last night, and it showed.

Legia Warsaw’s 100% record continues in the Europa League, with none of Rangers’ armaments able to land a major glove on the home goal, while Allan McGregor was called into some big saves at the other end.

Ibrox Noise brings you our ratings for a stuffy night in Warsaw:

These are his big nights, when he’s on the ball, makes crucial saves, and leads by example. A few very important stops and some excellent reading of the game meant he was able to maintain a huge clean sheet for the visiting side. 8

Some excellent crossing in the first half, but he faded notably in that respect and wasn’t seen as much of an attacking force after around 30 minutes. Really isn’t attacking with the same vigour and panache he used to, and the loss of Candeias has clearly changed him. Defending was decent. 6

Slightly out of position for a dangerous cross early on, for which his partner berated him, but steadied after that and was mostly adequate – was completely done in the second half but got bailed out big time by Flanagan. But while playing consistently enough, it’s just not as standout as his partner. 6

His form grows by match – soaked up everything, nearly scored, and is right now Rangers’ best defender. He’s doing the brute force stuff he always did, but has added culture and consideration to it, and snuffed most threats out. 8

Colossal night for the left back – this was one of his big ones. Some huge blocks, excellent reading, and that last-ditch side block was worth a goal. Intelligent defending, supported attack pretty well too (of what little there was of it) and can be very happy with probably his best display in a Rangers shirt. 9

Very steady and measured display from the NI man, with simple passing and movement – played in a more advanced role in the first half than he has recently, but retreated considerably in the second. Didn’t waste much, and was meticulous. 7

Some wonderful moments of individual and team-play, Aribo showed his class plenty of times, even if he didn’t quite dominate midfield like we hope he has the potential to do. His touch is true, his passing excellent, but we do wish he didn’t fade so noticeably in the middle third (30 minutes-60 minutes). 7

An industrious performance by a hard-working midfielder, this was a very robust and energetic display, working in all three areas of the pitch for his team. He’s revelling in the shirt these days and while he has his lesser performances, they’re not that often now. 8

Can literally copy over Jack’s appraisal and add the word ‘attacking’ for Arfield. 8

Worked so hard making runs, but wasn’t able to really affect the game the way he would want. Was managed well by his opponent, but did do damage with winning fouls. Wasn’t given enough good service, in truth. 7

Had one big big chance and just wasn’t clinical enough at this level – hopefully the miss won’t cost Rangers much, but Morelos was mostly a bystander in this match. Did try to cause a nuisance but was manhandled rather smartly by the home defence. 6

Steven Gerrard picked pretty much the team we expected, but will be a little aggrieved his side just didn’t land any blows at all. It was McGregor called into action the most, and while Rangers can hold their heads high after not the worst night ever, we do wonder why Stevie elected to leave the subs till the final 5 minutes. And didn’t bother with on-form Jordan Jones at all. Legia by far the best team Rangers have faced this season, and there is a tonne of work to do at Ibrox to win this one in the 90 minutes. Legia will be delighted to maintain their clean sheets and now they have the away goal advantage. Could go to the wire. 6

  1. Looking at this now, we have maturity to face these teams up this wouldn't have happened 12 months ago. I'm sure SG and his coaches will be looking at ways to get in behind that defence and perhaps use Defoe and Jones to unlock opportunities . Proud of the Famous last night .
