There is a second curiosity to the Sheyi Ojo story on top of the ‘youth’ angle, and it’s one Rangers fans may be even less happy about than they were over the first.
Does the possible capture of Ojo confirm Rangers are not getting Ryan Kent?
Steven Gerrard announced an offer for a further loan for Kent had been lodged with Liverpool, but this breaking news suggests that offer has not been accepted. In all fairness, Kent is now a prized and valuable commodity – Rangers turned him from a nothing nomad whose career was going nowhere into a £10-£15M player, and Liverpool will want to convert that into hard money.
We don’t blame them if that’s the route they’ve taken, and while Kent has been open to the idea of staying at Ibrox in the past, he’s never been explicit about committing himself to Govan. And that is also ok. He’s Liverpool’s player and he wants to play for them if he can – he’s probably not good enough, of course, but then there has been word Jurgen Klopp is interested in recalling he and Harry Wilson for pre-season to size them up for squad depth.
And Kent would be very keen on that. As Stevie put it, Liverpool know we want him, the player knows we want him, but sadly, he was unable to confirm Liverpool are keen to give us him or that he himself was keen on extending his stay.
And the interest in Ojo does force the possible conclusion that Rangers are not paying the multimillions for Kent Liverpool want, and they aren’t interested in a loan again.
However, there may be a significant silver lining in this, and we’ll cover that later on.
