Player Ratings: “A great asset”, “His worst display” – who shone and struggled v Spartak?

We know, we know, it’s a bit late, but hey, sue us! After yesterday’s intriguing draw v Spartak, Rangers remain top of the table.

But how did your players and managers fare on the night. Ibrox Noise takes you through our calls on the best and worst at Ibrox.

Allan McGregor:

Another quiet match, had little of significance to deal with. 6
James Tavernier:

Crossing was definitely not up to his usual scratch, and he managed barely one good delivery in the whole 90. He’s been better than this of late, definitely not his strongest performance. 6

Connor Goldson:

Pretty solid night at the back for Connor, one early careless loss of possession in midfield but otherwise deal with pretty much everything. We will say he maybe lacks a little power aerially, but makes up for it with use of his height. 7

Joe Worrall:

Seems to really step up in Europe – nothing much got past him, and in terms of brute defending absolutely did his job. Much better than his display v Hearts. 7

Jon Flanagan:

Decent again – Flanagan is just a classic 6 or 7/10 player who rarely does anything amazing but rarely lets anyone down. Did his job, closed off the channel and even did a good bit of work in attack. 7

Ryan Jack:

Very polished performance from Jack – one cheap loose pass was all we noticed all night, and he excelled at positional reading and mopping up. Very good. 8

Lassana Coulibaly:

A change of tactic (more on that in another entry) saw Couli much more advanced – and it worked fairly well to get a little more out of him than we’ve seen recently. Less of the destroying and more supporting play. A decent night. 7

Ovie Ejaria:

While not quite a masterclass in midfield, it was his best yet and he really shone in terms of what he did. Was a bit deep at times and perhaps a little wasted so far back, but that’s what his manager told him to do. A fine outing. 8

Ryan Kent:

Not quite as miraculous as he was v Vienna and Hearts, but still very, very good and a constant handful. His marauding run from left to centre before sweeping the ball out wide was truly thrilling and this kid is developing into a great asset. Rangers need to seriously look at holding onto him. 8

Daniel Candieas:

Easily his worst display of late, the renaissance in his form came to a crashing halt and all we can really say for him is he worked very hard. Crossing was horrific (apart from a bizarre spell of two in quick succession in the second half which were nailed on) and he didn’t really look dangerous. More frustrated than anything else and lucky not to be sent off. 5

Alfredo Morelos:

Not as bright as he can be, but grafts ever harder and keeps working for the team. Nearly let the side down badly with aggressive pushing which might have seen a red, but supported his team and held the ball up as much as he could. Hard working but not overly effective in truth. 6

Eros Grezda:

This guy is just awful at the moment, for club and country. 0

Glenn Middleton:

Not a lot of time to make an impact, but, sadly for Glenn, he was terrible. Probably tried too hard. 1

Steven Gerrard:

We told you what his team would be, so perhaps his selection was a little predictable, and it was a bit concerning that the second half was, like v Hamilton, pretty rank. The substitutions were wrong, and there was an overall lack of coherence in the play. This probably wasn’t the best we’ve seen from our manager. 5

Thoughts, moans, and angry disagreements in the usual place friends!

  1. too many players not getting forward quick enough, morelos needs support,no penetration up front, Spartak were there to be beat last night especially in the first half, spartak sussed that and changed it at the break and gave us a lot of problems in the second half, but we still should have won that game. why not bring lafferty on 15 minutes left and go for it, 41 minutes before we we had a shot on target.and can somebody tell me why we all go crazy when we get a corner because nothing ever happens.who is going to score he goals on sunday,i just hope arfields fit.

  2. Sorry but have to disagree about Flanagan. His passing was woeful and he got caught in behind quite a few times. For me he doesnt convince at LB, wants to use his right foot too often and comes across as a weak link.
Grezda offered little when he came on, looked out of position for me. Middleton shouldve been on earlier. We missed Arfield big time.
Hard game against typically organised side.

  3. Me personally, i'd put Candeis and tav, practising their corners, for a whole week. The amount of over-shot Candeis corners I've seen of late, is mad. Grezda better pull his socks up. We can't be carrying dead weight, this season. Kent and Ejaria, I thought were outstanding. Olly, you're right about them not pushing in to the box far enough, when crosses go in. I've said that, for months now. When we're on the front foot and attacking, is when all the good stuff, seems to happen.

  4. 1. Rather than have Flanagan playing out of position and playing Woeful
…why not use Wallace as backup for BB?

    2. I am not a Fan of Worrall but given Katic's Horror show in the last match…Needs Must.

    3. Move Heaven&Earth to Sign Kent on a Permanent Deal

    4. Love Candei as a player, just not happening for him at the moment

    5. Decent shift from Morelos but we should have gone with two up top.

    6. This guy cost us £2mill ?!?!
…This guy is not good enough
    Sell, Sell, Sell

    7. Middleton should have been brought on Earlier or even given a Start instead of Candeias perhaps? 🤔

    8. We Missed Arfield!

    9. We need a no.10! A Playmaker!
    Someone who can unpick defences.

    10. SG : Needs Improvement
Needs to be Sharper on and off the Park

  5. Flanagan is there as part of the auld pals act by our manager we need to acept that . And i dont see how we can build a team for the future when we keep bringing in loanees just not good enough we need players we can call our own not players who cant get a game for their parent club .This does not give our club stability so come Dave get the cash out and BUY us the players that we can call our own .
