27 goals and assists in 48 matches – if Rangers were interested in signing a player with those numbers the majority of fans would be all for them, but the reality is no matter what Cyriel Dessers does, he’s always going to have detractors in our support.
We’re not going to lambast them too harshly, lord knows Ibrox Noise have blasted many of our players repeatedly this season ourselves, so we’re self aware here.
But with his numbers, Dessers just keeps on proving himself, and his latest double at Hampden which fired Rangers into the final v Celtic demonstrated he will never stop delivering at the highest level.
Remember, he’s the guy who offered two assists v PSV at Ibrox in the Beale days, Dessers just keeps on doing it.
But this will just never win over all Rangers fans, some of whom have been quite nasty about him.
He said on that:
“At the start I think it got to me.”
We’re not going to preach as holier-than-thou by condemning everyone else – as we say, we’ve been pretty strong in opinion ourselves against the likes of Goldson, Lundstram lately, even Tav earlier this season.
But Dessers has kept on proving his doubters wrong.
We’ve done stats analysis so many times, and while he’s very poor for the offsides, in getting caught too much, and he maybe should get more shots away and quicker, you can’t argue with the raw numbers.
In a direct contest between he and the fans’ favourite Lawrence Shankland, it was Dessers by miles to come out on top. And Ibrox Noise has shown how, aside pure league goals, Dessers is the more efficient and effective striker of the two.
So will he get the love again?
We don’t know, our fanbase is stubborn and doesn’t like some players no matter what they do.
But Dessers can just keep doing what he’s doing and leave the critics to it.
