GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - MARCH 14: Connor Goldson of Rangers is consoled by Philippe Clement, Manager of Rangers, after the team's defeat in the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 round of 16 second leg match between Rangers FC and SL Benfica at Ibrox Stadium on March 14, 2024 in Glasgow, Scotland. Rangers fans have made up their mind in the most one-sided Ibrox Noise poll the site has run in living memory, after asking supporters if Connor Goldson should be dropped.

At the time of writing, Goldson, of 1700 votes and counting, has just 55 backers, with a whopping 96% reckoning he should be dropped.

It is safe to say the fans who previously would be most vocal about him being our best defender are just about entirely silent now, and the-near 100% of fans who want to drop him to the bench speak the loudest with their votes.

Now, are we sitting here scapegoating him and blaming him for how things have gone the past month or so?

No, we’re not.

But it absolutely starts with him, and to say that he’s been ‘off it’ for some considerable time would be something of an understatement.

The bottom line is since 2018 Connor Goldson has played more than anyone else in the SPL (308 appearances) bar James Tavernier (312) and the only reason he trails fractionally behind Tav was that injury in 2022 which laid him out to ‘just’ 38 appearances that season.

We’re not going to sit here slaughtering him, others have done plenty of that, but our issue, of course, resides with his being untouchable and undroppable despite how badly he is playing.

He is the most undroppable player we think we’ve seen since Lee McCulloch back in the day, even more so than Tav who actually did have competition and brief spells on the bench with the rise of Nathan Patterson and even Lee Hodson all those moons ago.

But Goldson offers so little, that Rangers supporters clearly have had enough.

The real question is will Philippe Clement drop him, or is he contractually unable to?

We guess we’ll find out on Wednesday when Goldson’s name surely will once again frustratingly sit immune on the team sheet.
