Rangers have been given a big boost with Todd Cantwell’s return to training after around a month out with a muscle pull sustained at McDiarmid Park.

The playmaker, 26, has missed a fair bit of football in the past 4 weeks, but he was warmly welcomed back to the fold as Rangers stepped up training and preparation for tomorrow night’s goliath Benfica clash second leg.

Is he ready to start?

Well obviously he’s a bit below match fitness so we would be very surprised to see him named in the starting XI, but as was noted by so many, Cantwell had finally started to regain his form from last season before, typically, getting injured.

So his return to the match day squad would be very welcome indeed.

He is one of many who has been suffering with Rangers’ injury blight, but being able to remove him from the injury list and restore him as an option for manager Philippe Clement is absolutely perfect.

Simply put, Rangers have only had Tom Lawrence for that position in recent weeks, and while mercifully the Welshman hasn’t picked up any injuries, that we now have a second player in the 10 position is a lot better a situation to be in.

With Dujon Sterling seemingly missing training, Rangers are thin in choices to say the least, and the return of the former Norwich star is a big boost for all concerned.

We assume he will be at least on the bench on Thursday evening, even if he can only last 10 minutes, or perhaps he’s still short of fitness to even contend for a bench place.

Either way, it’s good to see Cantwell in action again, and it’s something that helps Philippe Clement considerably.
