Rangers blow as Todd Cantwell ruled out for 4 weeks

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed Todd Cantwell is out medium term and is likely to be unavailable for much of March, following the nasty knock and ice pack he took v St Johnstone on their mudbath of a pitch.

It’s a big blow for a player who had LITERALLY just started regaining his old form from last season, to now miss out for potentially 3 or 4 weeks if not more, and weakens Rangers significantly in his area.

Cantwell had failed most of this season to replicate anything like his 22/23 form, but in the past month, with the arrival of Diomande, we’d seen a significant upturn in workrate, quality, and all-round attitude.

Not flawless, but a tonne better, and he was becoming, again, a big part of Rangers’ front third.

That has now ended, and Rangers will have to seek alternative solutions.

Funnily enough, this may well open the door we thought more shut for Dujon Sterling in midfield, with Diomande likely to occupy the 10 slot now vacated by Cantwell.

Rangers are threadbare with options in there, with the Ivorian and Wales’ Tom Lawrence now Rangers’ only available choices to play behind the striker, and with Lawrence’s fitness an issue of contention that may just open the door for Diomande to lay claim to the 10 position while Sterling sits deeper where he’s best?

It’s still not ideal though, Rangers don’t want to miss our best players, and while Cantwell could be argued as sleepwalking the majority of the season, he’s back in form of late and his loss is a blow.

That said, Clement signed guys like Diomande to be able to cover such losses, and hopefully Rangers are no weaker for losing the ex-Norwich man.

We coped fairly well without Abdallah Sima, after all.
