At long last Graeme Souness has confirmed his attempts to get a job at Ibrox are over after admitting the ‘consultant’ role was a fail and the club aren’t interested in him.
Speaking before this weekend’s cup clash with Hibs, the former Rangers manager admitted it was done and dusted, and the advisory role he was eager for isn’t happening.
He said:
“That’s been and gone. We spoke about it, but it’s not going to happen. I’m not going to enlarge on it.”
This is polite speak for ‘I screwed it up over the Lampard thing and myself and the board just weren’t aligned so it’s fallen apart’.
See, it was one thing for Souness to have a bad call of misjudgement in picking Frank Lampard over Philippe Clement, he is indeed allowed an opinion.
But to peddle his opinion repeatedly even after the appointment and undermine the current manager by repeating that he’d wanted Lampard really didn’t sit too well with anyone at Ibrox and the notion of a consultancy role was subsequently dead and buried.
Just how much can you trust the advice of someone who wanted Lampard over Clement?
We’re not going to kick the guy about it any more, we still do remember fondly the good things he did for the club in the past and the public support he’s frequently offered, but as far as having any credibility sadly Souness took a sharp downturn in recent years and doesn’t seem to have a lot of value to offer now. He says some questionable things at best.
But yes, it’s now officially about as official as it gets, Souness isn’t coming back as an advisory or anything else, and in truth he did say some weeks ago that he was ready if the club needed him, but clearly the club didn’t.
So that is that.
