Sadly, thanks to a bit of a boob from Rangers manager Philippe Clement, the solution to Rangers’ winger injury and selection crisis is himself now injured for an unconfirmed period, and Rangers must make do without Oscar Cortes.
This is a huge issue – Clement brought him in because we needed wingers, only to make a rookie error with Killie’s pitch in selecting him, so now we lose him two minutes after signing him.
Which leaves the winger situation a mite tricky.
In short we’re down to Scott Wright and Ross McCausland, neither of whom have shone at the level of either Rabbi Matondo or the Colombian newbie, meaning there will be a real lack of guile, craft, pace and power not to mention trickery on the wings as Motherwell come to Ibrox.
This does make selection trickier, but of course Clement has been deploying Dujon Sterling on the flanks recently, to, admittedly, decent effect, but it’s not his natural position.
He is unlikely to beat men and he’s not naturally creative, but he is quick and he does have power.
So the wings are between McCausland, Wright and Sterling, with Cortes and Matondo unavailable as things appear.
Clement is a fine manager for sure, and Rangers are on an incredible run, but the boss has made some errors here and there, and selecting Cortes on Killie’s horror pitch was definitely one of them.
It leaves us back to where we were before the January window regarding flank options, and arguably even worse off because Matondo isn’t around either.
All we put our faith in is that, as always, those who fill in for injured players step up and do the job.
Because Rangers would very much like a 5-point lead again with ‘them lot’ facing Hearts tomorrow.
The win against Killie was huge, but the cost of Cortes was significant.
Clement has lost quite a few options in recent times, and not all of them can be blamed on SPL hatchet men.
I’d put Lawrence out there, Sterling in with Lunny and Dio in front of them. Hopefully bring on Wright to rest Lawrence when games over
