Rangers fans have overwhelmingly voted on the Ibrox side’s defence, and it’s a clear, and yet strangely contradictory winner.

1400 fans voted on an Ibrox Noise poll over Rangers’ defence, and the outcome was unequivocal, with the question and options as thus:

Should James Tavernier and Connor Goldson be part of a full-strength Rangers defence?

The options were Both, Neither, Just Tavernier and Just Goldson.

The overall answer was emphatic.

77% of those responding believe both should 100% remain as stalwarts at the back, that’s 1024 of 1400 fans considering Rangers are better when both of them play.

But the numbers get clearly very interesting when it comes to the individual.

11% wanted neither of them at the back, and only 10% wanted Tav alone.

And an even worse 2% wanted Goldson alone.

Very interesting numbers.

It’s definitive that Rangers supporters don’t overly always love either Tav or Goldson. There was a telling lack of individual backing for either player.

But put them together as a partnership and that is, for supporters, overwhelmingly the popular choice and it’s understandable given Rangers’ defence is the best in Scotland.

Ibrox Noise did go a long way to explaining why Tavernier is effectively the best and most important player in Scotland. His stats are staggering.

But Goldson is modest at best, his individual numbers are simply not good enough for a Rangers defender. They’re lower per capita on almost every level than any other Ibrox stopper.

But put the two together, and clearly it works – there’s an understanding there, and it’s aided Rangers to win a trophy, be the best defence in the SPL and get to the last 16 of the Europa League yet again.

77% of Rangers fans patently don’t want to change that.
