Rangers are to appoint former adversary James Fowler as the new Head of Academy Recruitment, with recent reports placing the ex-Queen of the South manager as frontrunner.
Rangers fans will vividly remember the club’s old tussles with Fowler’s charges in the lower division, with the Doonhamers a regular nemesis of various Rangers manager back in the day and frequently getting good results under Fowler’s watch.
With his playing days back then only recently retired, he took over at Palmerston Park permanently and managed a decent 40% win rate including quite a few points off Rangers, so we can absolutely tell he’s a decent football man.
He has no historical connection otherwise with Rangers whatsoever, being well-remembered also for his time as a Killie player, spending more or less his entire career with them, amassing over 400 appearances at Rugby Park.
He briefly had a spell as Sunderland caretaker manager with an outstanding 100% win rate! Yes, he had one match there, and won it.
Time will tell if Fowler gets the gig at Auchenhowie, he’s one who’s well-rated in the game, and clearly has some talent in coaching – he’s also still young at just 43 so getting into the world of management and scouting and this would be a very wise appointment for both parties.
We’ll see if Fowler does get the biggest job of his life over the coming while.
