Rangers fans are exasperated this evening after Belgian giants made a bid for former Ibrox defender and current Odense stopper Filip Helander, who has been absolutely outstanding and injury-free in Denmark since his arrival there.

In evidence Rangers’ injury curse is just that far-reaching, the Swedish centre half, 30, who had fairly normal injury history before joining the club, then missed well over 100 matches in a short space of time at Ibrox, before being released on that basis.

He hasn’t been injured since.

And his exceptional displays at Odense have alerted Belgian cracks Anderlecht who are working on a pre-contract/bid for the Sweden international to either join now or the summer.

Questions from fans understandably target Rangers’ medical;

Helander, Kemar Roofe, John Souttar, Ryan Jack, Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, Nico Raskin, Danilo, and going further back into the infamy of Jordan Rossiter, John Eustace, Niko Kranjcar and Graham Dorrans, this is long-standing historical issues the club simply never resolved.

The return of Dr Mark Waller has improved things a bit – we no longer have the raft of 10 injuries at once like we used to, but it’s still always the case a few are long term out.

Philippe Clement proudly announced the use of the cryo system that he was so aghast hadn’t been used enough, but while we do see some improvement in the injuries re: that and Waller’s return, Helander’s imminent transfer to Belgium remains a horrifying symbol of the mess of our medical and why we’ve lost out on a top defender who could have been so much more for the £3M we spent on him.

Still, best of luck to the lad if he moves.
