There’s no doubt Rangers’ January window hasn’t got going. Tonnes of speculation, but not a single signing, aside December’s addition of Fabio Silva.
We’re now fractionally behind halfway through the month, and while every player and his dog has loosely been linked to the club, none have come close to being additions.
Now at his last gig, Monaco, Philippe Clement only got one player signed in that January window, and the season ultimately didn’t work out for him in France.
But previously at Genk and Brugge he was getting a lot of players in each January (minimum of 4 each season) window, and with those he won all those Belgian titles.
But at Rangers, like Monaco, just that one addition in Silva.
It’s at the point now where we’re potentially into panic adding, like in January 22 with Giovanni, unless we manage to get our hands on a player we’ve wanted the whole time. Which isn’t looking too likely.
Now, for any player out of contract in the summer, January 1st onwards was the time they could talk to us. So that doesn’t change when the window ends. Just like Borna, any player out of contract this summer can still talk to who he likes till the summer and sign a precontract at any point.
But for loan deals, which is our main currency this window, January is but four weeks long.
And we just can’t see any money being spent at all.
The fundamental issue is our squad is extremely poor.
A cobbled-together mess, imbalanced, with key players like John Lundstram and Borna Barisic out of contract this summer, and a complete dearth of quality and fit wingers.
Clement needs more. The problem at the moment is what he has doesn’t cut it, and no new blood seems any more in sight now than it was in December.
Finger needs to come out here.
