If there is one thing we’ve not quite covered yet in this slew of content from Ibrox Noise tonight, it’s the new Rangers interim management team.

We consider this team a very shrewd appointment, even if interim coach Steven Davis doesn’t exactly have the loudest personality or even the biggest voice – he will simply lead Alex Rae, Colin Stewart, Brian Gilmour and perhaps the one we’re most interested and intrigued by, Steven Smith.

The initial plan with this lot is to get a bunch of blue blood back in the squad, because these are all Rangers fans, one and all.

It’s maybe playing a bit to the galleries a spot, and doesn’t include some names some fans would like, such as McCann, Ferguson or Thomson, but it’s a step in the direction of appeasing those of us who believe the blue heart of the club was ripped out by the Mick.

The one, as we said, we’re the most impressed with is Smith – this lad is a very, very smart cookie, and anyone who has ever listened to his stuff on Rangers TV co-commentating would be very, very inspired by him.

He knows football, he’s technical, but he doesn’t drown you in lingo – he explains in simple terms very complex ideas, and translates certain tactics into layman’s language anyone can understand.

He is, in short, a very, very promising young coach (who has his own academy, incidentally) who is in a fine position to really help out at Rangers now, and for one relatively youthful he got into coaching at a very tender age and is extremely experienced now.

Of course, he’s a million miles off managerial material yet, but he’s someone you’d absolutely want in Rangers’ backroom staff offering his wisdom under any circumstances, not just these.

This really was a smart call from the board, putting him among the guts of this interim crew, and while we’re not saying 56 is coming this year because of him, he will add a lot to the group and we’d be intrigued to see how things get on.

Interesting times.
