Rangers defender Ben Davies may have managed a staggering return from the ashes of nearly departing by not only restoring himself to first pick for the club, but being on media duties as well for the clash tomorrow with Hearts.

While the former Preston defender isn’t and probably never will be flavour of the month with fans, and was certainly close to leaving this summer, it didn’t happen and despite supporter wishes, John Souttar was benched against Hearts and we believe will be tomorrow as well.

Davies has a big advantage over Souttar, which is an extended run alongside Connor Goldson, plus, of course, his foot orientation, being the club’s only left-footed defender.

Souttar may be fans’ pick as the better defender, which he is, but modern managers generally prefer a leftie and a righty due to the direction they face and how they orient themselves in play – the symmetry is considered more effective.

Having two defenders of the same footedness is generally not preferred.

So Davies’ place in the press conference prior to tomorrow’s trip to Dundee not to mention his playing two of three Clement matches so far does suggest he’s risen from the ashes to be reinstalled, for now, as the club’s number one partner for Goldson.

And yes, the Goldson undroppability, for now, also remains in place. He is 100% undroppable for now even under this manager for the at least foreseeable future and that is that.

But yes, Davies is now, it appears, back to being his partner.

Only Rangers leaking lots of goals will see any amount of change there. John Souttar is just going to have to be content with sitting on the bench again.
