A shock story has emerged over the past 24 hours and we’re not entirely sure what to make of it – new manager of Al Ettifaq Steven Gerrard is reportedly interested in Rangers’ captain James Tavernier, in a claim which may just be clickbait sites putting 2+2 to get 5, but there are said to be more than one Saudi club also looking at the right back.
Tavernier is a lucrative potential asset for the Saudi league, purely because as a massively assisting and goalscoring defender he’s seen as perfect for the recent growth of an exciting new domestic league which is currently in all the news.
For the Saudi Arabian league, a razzmatazz player like he who can score and assist and is ‘bombastic’ in nature as Tavernier is, the English attacker (he’s sure not a stopper) may just fit Steven Gerrard’s side perfectly.
These clubs have money, obscene levels, and if Celtic can ship out Jota for about £25M into that part of the world Rangers can comfortably look for the same for Tavernier, despite his age.
Is Gerrard serious? If the story is true, and it could be, yes, yes he would be. Steven Gerrard absolutely loved James Tavernier – he knew the guy is nowhere near good enough for the Premier League so never made any moves for him as Villa boss, but Saudi Arabia is very different and a RB like he could fit in perfectly.
But of course if the story is true, would Ibrox Noise want to sell him?
Absolutely – regardless of the money, Tavernier is a gigantic weak spot at the back and replacing him wouldn’t be difficult at all. We want our strikers and forwards scoring our goals, not our RB.
No idea if the story is accurate, but we hope it is.
