Rangers need to get quick and ruthless with the dead wood

We mentioned this recently, and even alluded to it earlier today – Rangers are simply not clearing out the dead wood quickly enough and aren’t thinning the herd anywhere near efficiently enough.

Deep into June, and into July now, and only six men have actually left Rangers – Allan McGregor, Filip Helander, Scott Arfield, Malik Tillman, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos. Steven Davis is technically a seventh but that’s been made vague by his injury.

Ibrox Noise suggested that a boatload needed to go, and that an exodus of up to 20 players might be potent going forward, but unfortunately there are a lot of players completely surplus to Michael Beale’s Rangers needs that the club is struggling to dispense with.

Glen Kamara is certainly one, his heart is elsewhere, but Rangers haven’t got a buyer yet there. Scott Wright is another, completely surplus and we need to ship him away, ditto Jon McLaughlin.

But there are others as well, fit for an exit:

Nnambi Ofoborh, Mateusz Zukowski, Adam Devine, Ben Davies, Lewis Mayo, Leon King and maybe even Alex Lowry who are on the absolute fringes (aside Davies) of the squad and who aren’t going to play a major role next season that need to be cut loose somehow.

That’s at least 10 players that aren’t of use to the club and where either there are better options already or we intend to acquire such options that really could open up a tonne of wages for new blood.

Davies is especially a problem – a poor performer, he belongs in League One but he’s sat on a strong £30,000pw wage and will be a majorly stubborn one to get shot of (thank you Ross Wilson). No one at that level or even the Championship is going to match that wage. We’re likely to be as stuck with him as we are Goldson. More on him later.

But the fact is we need to get rid of players before we can add more. We have 34 players in the first-team squad, we’ve signed four and shipped out 6, maybe 7. We had 37…

That means we’ve not got rid of enough and the next 10 days are vital.

By the time preseason starts in earnest, Michael Beale wants a much different squad to the mess he finished last season with. It’s safe to say that right now, while there’s been some progress, we really need to shed more dead wood quickly, because the manager doesn’t want to be training players he isn’t going to work with next season.

Let’s get to it Rangers.

  1. As much as we are loving the Beale revolution with the new and recent signings, the lack of critical and ruthless removal of those not required is needed. This must happen and quickly , if not it will affect the forward movement and approaching seasons objectives and taint the squad . I hope Bisgrove and Bennett back this and Beale with serious vigur.
