Lot of Rangers fans want the club to bring in former £20M England international Jack Butland, when Allan McGregor finally hangs up the gloves this summer.

The 30-year-old Manchester United reserve goalie on loan from Crystal Palace, with 9 caps to his name, will himself be out of contract this summer and he’s a favourite of many supporters to replace the outgoing Greegsy.

Butland is said to be keen on a change, and his loan at Old Trafford will not be extended and Palace aren’t going to extend his deal – so is the transfer viable?

Yes it is. We’ve seen plenty of success stories when reasonably young England players came north – Jermain Defoe did well for a while at 34 at Ibrox, and Joe Hart has done well at Celtic – Jack Butland is a very talented goalie who could probably have achieved more in his career and is a favourite of many Rangers fans to be the new number one.

83 shut-outs in 293 career appearances is more than respectable, given 87 of those appearances were in the Premier League, with 404 goals conceded in those 293 outings.

It’s more than good.

He has of course never played for Man Utd despite being on loan there for this entire season, but managed 35 Premier League starts for Stoke in 2017/2018, including 6 clean sheets in 36 starts. He conceded 63 goals.

The guy is a talented goalie, and that’s the kind of level Rangers have to aim at in order to improve, and find a fitting successor for Allan McGregor. With he and deputy Jon McLaughlin likely to both leave this summer, Butland and understudy Robby McCrorie would be pretty useful as one and two, with either of them deserving the shirt based on form.

But Rangers definitely need a good stopper in there, and Butland has been on the fans’ lips for a long time.

Will Rangers make it happen? Time will surely tell, but we could do a lot worse, and we certainly have. We’ll see this summer if the former Premier League star comes to Rangers and we finally have a decent number one.
