Rangers are reported to be looking at Independiente Santa Fe’s 19-year-old defender Kevin Andrés Mantilla Camargo, after Jürgen Norbert Klopp and Liverpool stole a march on the stopper with a view to bringing him to Anfield.
The centre-back, who turns 20 in May, had been reported as entering preliminary discussions with the Premier League giants, but Rangers are now looking into hijacking the deal and bringing him to Ibrox.
Do we know much about this lad? Well he’s a CB, but has deputised at both RB and LB, so he’s clearly versatile, and his big claim to fame is being a 15-time Colombian U20 international, including a goal.
So he’s evidently able to play a bit, and clearly aspires to a bit more than Colombia’s CategorÃa Primera A, the top flight of the South American nation, just as our Alfredo Morelos did, playing for, as he did, the same league’s Deportivo Independiente MedellÃn before Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi scouted him out and took him to the Veikkausliiga, Finland’s top flight.
In short, Mantilla would be, in theory, one for the future, unless it is believed he’s ready now, which we’re not so sure he is, given he only has one career appearance in the Premier League of Colombia, and has prior been in the reserves level.
It’s also rather uncommon for a player to have as many as 15 caps for a youth team at any level, simply because of the obviousness of growing up, and how long a player can legitimately qualify for any youth age range at international level, and in his case he got the good luck of playing for his country in the U-20 South American Championship 2023 which took place at the start of this year and is where teams like Liverpool and indeed Rangers are spotting South American talent for the future.
Are Rangers to make a move? Well information is we have sent a feeler out, so it’s whether the kid wants Anfield or Ibrox at the end of the day.
Who in their right minds would pick Anfield over Ibrox, we’d love to know?!
