“Worst night – minus 10” – Rangers players rated after Liverpool humbling

Rangers once again found the depth of the Champions League way beyond the capabilities of their leaky armbands, and were humbled in every way bar score at Anfield.

Ibrox Noise brings you our ratings on yet another humiliation at this level.

McGregor:

One of the few who can walk away with their head high, his performance tonight wasn’t exactly vintage, he can pull off those saves in his sleep, but with McLaughlin in goal Rangers would have conceded close to 10. Be more worried that you were praising McGregor for bailing us out than angry that he had to. 7

Tavernier:

Deeply, woefully, and shockingly short at this level, Tavernier got his career break by moving to Scotland and that and the UEL are his level, the Champions League is another beast entirely and he’s not up to it. Left King et al exposed for the penalty. 3

Goldson:

Honestly, had a fair few blocks and clearances, and this was a lot better than his weak showing in matchday one. Did well enough. 6

King:

Another one with an honourable performance, his naivete cost the penalty but he should never have been exposed like that. Despite the error we give him 6 too.

Davies:

A surprisingly strong night from Davies, despite not being terribly visible, he made a lot of defensive contributions and helped stop things being a lot worse. 6

Barisic:

He was soft, and didn’t do a lot. Didn’t do much wrong, but looked a bit fearful most of the evening. Was the least effective defender aside his opposite flank. 5

Lundstram:

Really struggled – was once again left to deal with Davis as his partner and once again it didn’t work. A tough night for him. 4

Davis:

A literal career low from him – hardly touched the ball, and made little impact at all. This was once his level, it isn’t now. It’s passed him by. 3

Kent:

Really wanted to impress but had absolutely nothing to work with, nothing to feed off. Equally his workrate seemed low and he looked like a rabbit in headlights. He did manage one or two dribbles and a bad cross but he didn’t shine. 4

Tillman:

This was probably the night where most fans wanted to package him in an SAE and return to sender. He was literally invisible. 0

Morelos:

Didn’t have a lot to work with, but what he did get he wasted. He didn’t look up for the fight at all, didn’t press, didn’t work like the Morelos we (used to) know. 3

Subs:

Jack:

Actually tidy and helped to shore midfield up a bit. 6

Matondo:

Bright, looked hungry and nearly scored a stunning goal. 7

Kamara:

Ironically the best he’s played in ages – cut out a lot of balls and used his passes well. 7

Sakala:

Showed more courage in his cameo than most of the team had. Tried with what he had. 6

Colak:

Managed more in 10 minutes than Freddo had in 80. Nearly scored. Will be disgusted he didn’t start. 7

Gio:

This was, quietly, by a distance, his worst night as Rangers manager (we say that too much now). He set up a mess of a formation, made a bunch of bad selection decisions, and while the score was modest, the players literally didn’t show up, didn’t understand the formation (who could blame them) and were left lost by him. He’s a completely **** manager in the Champions League, and isn’t learning a thing. -10

  1. Have to agree with the Gio summary.
Five at the back? Fair enough but you have to allow your WB/FB’s to pass the half way line.
Four midfielders spread across the pitch, gaps galore for Liverpool to exploit. Lundstrum and Davis were poor but they were hung out to dry chasing shadows. Tillman is not a RM/RW, he has to play central!!!!
We played far too defensive and even then they created a ridiculous amount of chances.
The best we could hope for in attack was to lump it forward hoping Kent and Morelos could create something out of nothing.
I expected us to be the whipping boys but I also expected we’d make it hard for teams to take the points!!

  2. We will go out on zero points, its obvious now we arent upto it. I think this team would even struggle at Europa Lge level this season. We’re weakened by sales, injuries, rubbish recruitment, bad tactics/formation, and some players disinterested.

  3. The usual suspects the usual failures . It’s a worrying time forget about CL forget about the standard of the opposition. We are going backwards very quickly , no depth in the squad injuries that are unexplained or even bloody credible ffs . No new changes with real consequences, apart from Colak , glimpses of Tillman and nothing else to fill the gaps left by Aribo and Bassey. What is the forward plan. The board and GVB will be judged on winning or not winning 56 end of .

  4. You are being kind to Gio with that rating, the guy is an absolute balloon, wished to God he would do what Super Ally never and walk away while he still has a shred of respect left, l forgot Tav, Davies, Davis, Kamara and Alfie were actually on the field, our loyal fans gave it 110% tonight when the team gave us 10%, something has really got to give, l will be stunned if we get a single trophy this season or even a final, its been absolutely cringeworthy so far

  6. Hopefully Gio will leave Kent in Liverpool on there way home, he was more dangerous for them against us & this jumping over the ball & forwards & backwards carry on reminds me of the under 10s sell him

  7. Get him gone and all the old players there no good for chamions league football its a big boys league not a old mans league they are well past there sell by date and should be sold in winter and summer to bring in good champions league pedigree to actually be good in the champions league i said it all along this cup is a farce whats the point in calling it a champions league when theres teams no even win there league and there in it why no call it a euro cup pffff utter shambles anyway gio needs to get ti fuck waster

    • Now we see how celtic struggled,it could have been 6 easily, but for mcgregor,a player who walked out on us and was allowed back, good job to.

  8. Tillman was an embarrassment, in fact the entire team except for McGregor played like a youth club team !!

  9. Pathetic! Would get seen off on a visit to the mighty teams on a Sunday on the old Glasgow Green! Gio – clueless not capable of moving the club forward. Setting up as a defensive unit was totally wrong when we know we have shaky defence. Team was asked to play in a nature uncomfortable from the kick-off and with no Colac up front how was any positive result possible? Liverpool were good but we made them look better than they really are. Kent destroyed any interest from clubs in looking for his signature with a zero. performance. New manager required for next season. Open the damn chequebook Rangers Board!

    • No wonder no one wants Morelos or now Kent, they cant play at this level, they will grab any contract there offered,as long as its here.

  10. Garbage – fire the lot including clueless Gio. I can see this season becoming a disaster even this early. New manager must be in place for next season and board must do the right thing and open the cheque book.Keep Colac and Macdonald. Lose the rest if anyone will buy!

  11. We are where we are because of financial clout or lack of it at this level to much of a knee jerk reaction from most reality check both, ourselves and Celtic are big fish in a small pond and would struggle to get out of the championship down south only way for us unless major investment is build it from the academy and that will take more years than the average supporter has patience for worst thing we can do is choo and change managers and coaching staff.

  12. TOTALLY agree gvb is shite ain’t got a clue we need to start those boys that come on they didn’t look out off place at all…tav was scared 😳 40 year old mcgregor was our best player and sorry so was king

  13. Team Selection a stigma….system an even bigger one…Gio has never learned a damned thing this campaign so far. Several players that are stalling contract extensions last night was perfect time for the Premier league hopefuls in our team to shine….they fell way short….Gio your not for me or this team…

  14. Got a bit better when subs were made especially colak the team that finished the game that’s what I would start with on Saturday gio will try to get a settled team morelos his heart is not in it Tillman hopeless especially when Charlie macann left out
