Media outlets believe Rangers are to change to a 3-5-2 formation to get the best of all worlds v Liverpool, in a formation which would not only include Alfredo Morelos alongside Antonio Colak, but Leon King too.
In a dynamic change to the 4-2-3-1 formation Gio has stuck mostly to since becoming Rangers manager, he may instead switch to a formation giving him the best of all worlds v Jurgen Klopp’s side, featuring a packed midfield, two men up front, and three defenders.
This would mean, in a radical shift:
McGregor in goals, a back three of King, Goldson and Davies, a three man mid of Arfield, Lundstram and Jack, with Barisic and Tavernier on the flanks, and Morelos up top with, according to those reports, either Kent or Colak.
This would be a team most Ibrox fans would be delighted with, and we must say, it’s a well-rounded solution.
It also adds the midfielder’s versatility to switch back and add another body in Rangers’ defence to turn it into a 4 at the back when needed.
Will this be Rangers’ system tonight?
Not only would fans be delighted with it, but it would be refreshing – this is not a consequential match; we want to win, but if there is a time to maybe experiment a little, this would be it, and this could just work.
We’ll see come this evening.
I would love to see Alfie playing in the 10 instead of Arfield/Tillman, I think he could do some damage behind Goalak. If Gio’s not tried them both together against anyone we’ve played up here, I can’t see a big change like that happening v Liverpool despite them struggling against 2 strikers recently. Hoping Kent has the game of his life tonight!
